Chapter 20 - The Recording in the Wall
Leah copied the cassette before anyone listened to it.
Ada’s voice emerged through static.
“If Nora is hearing this, Celeste has returned, and Elias Voss believes the trust can finally be opened.”
Ada explained that Hale Property Management had never been merely a business. After discovering Voss’s scheme, she secretly purchased endangered mortgages and placed vulnerable properties into protective trusts.
The original deed to Hale House contained a hidden clause. Whoever lawfully controlled the house could request access to a master trust holding evidence and recovered assets connected to the fraudulent transfers.
Voss had tried to obtain Nora’s house because he needed control of that clause.
Celeste had another reason.
She believed some of the recovered money belonged to her.
“I loved my daughter,” Ada said. “But Celeste began to believe that surviving injustice gave her permission to create her own.”
The recording revealed that Celeste had not simply been framed. Before disappearing, she secretly redirected funds from Voss’s companies. Some money went to victims.
Some went into accounts she controlled.
Ada refused to expose her daughter because doing so would also destroy the victims’ claims. Instead, she staged Celeste’s death and hid the evidence.
Nora stopped the tape.
“My grandmother protected her,” she said.
“And Celeste may have spent twenty-four years believing the money was hers,” Leah replied.
The final minutes of the recording contained instructions for locating the original master deed. Ada said it was hidden inside an object that had remained in Hale House since the day it was built.
She did not name the object.
Nora searched furniture, framed photographs, clocks, and cabinets.
At eleven that night, she looked up at the chandelier above the dining table.
Ada had chosen it before the house was completed. It had never been removed.
Inside the central brass column, Nora found a rolled document.
The original master deed.
Before she could read it, every light in Hale House went out.
A voice spoke from the dark doorway.
“Put the deed on the table.”
