Chapter 28 - The Eviction Filed Before Dawn
By eight thirty, two county vehicles were parked outside Hale House.
Volunteers stood on the sidewalk holding boxes of legal files while officers sealed the entrances. No one was arrested, but the message was clear.
The house no longer belonged to the people inside it.
Leah studied the receivership order from her car.
“The application claims you concealed stolen assets in the vault. It also claims the public hearing was compromised, so the court appointed an independent authority.”
“Who controls it?”
Leah enlarged the company registration.
THE HALE RESTORATION AUTHORITY.
Its director was Gabriel Hale.
Nora felt the cruelty of the name immediately. Gabriel was not merely taking the trust. He was presenting himself as the man rescuing it from her.
A black sedan stopped across the street.
Claire Brooks stepped out carrying a weathered envelope.
Nora recognized her from Evelyn House, another legal-support center that helped victims of financial abuse. The two organizations had shared training materials but had never handled the same case.
Claire walked directly to Nora.
“This arrived at Evelyn House eleven years ago.”
The envelope had been addressed by Ada Hale and delivered to Claire’s grandmother, Evelyn Brooks. Instructions on the front stated that it should remain sealed unless Hale House was placed under court control.
Claire had opened it that morning after seeing the news.
Inside was a photograph of Ada and Evelyn standing beside a filing cabinet. A handwritten note appeared on the back.
WHEN THEY TAKE HALE HOUSE, OPEN THE FIRST CLEAN DEED.
Claire also carried a property deed from Evelyn’s private archive.
It recorded the first home recovered from a fraudulent transfer involving Hale Property Management. The document appeared ordinary until Leah held it beneath the sunlight.
A second layer of ink became visible beneath Ada’s signature.
Someone had erased a beneficiary’s name.
Claire carefully treated the paper with an archival solution from her grandmother’s office.
Letters slowly returned to the page.
GABRIEL ELIAS HALE.
Benjamin sank into the passenger seat.
Nora read the name again.
“Why does he have Voss’s name?”
Benjamin did not respond.
Claire turned over another page.
Attached to the deed was an old birth registration.
Gabriel’s father had been Elias Voss.
Before Nora could question Benjamin, alarms began sounding inside Hale House.
The process server stepped back from the front entrance.
Every sealed door had opened at the same time.
On the dining-room table, where nothing had rested moments earlier, five blue folders had appeared.
One was marked HALE HOUSE.
The second was marked EVELYN HOUSE.
The remaining three carried addresses none of them recognized.
