Chapter 22 - The Hearing No One Announced

Leah filed an emergency challenge before sunrise, but Judge Sloan refused to delay the hearing.
Only Nora, Leah, Celeste’s attorney, and two court officers were permitted inside. The courtroom gallery remained empty.
Celeste did not appear.
Her attorney argued that she was being held for her own protection. He refused to identify who held her or where she was.
Judge Sloan treated the explanation as sufficient.
She questioned Nora about Hale House’s clients, financial records, and security failures. Her questions sounded less like a property inquiry and more like an attempt to discover what Ada had hidden.
Leah presented evidence that the hearing notice had been issued without proper authorization.
Sloan threatened to hold her in contempt.
Then Ruth Calder entered the courtroom.
She carried the old tenant ledger and a certified statement from the state archive.
Ruth explained that Ada’s trust had been registered under a special protective-property program. Any dispute required review by a three-judge panel, not a single county judge.
Sloan’s face tightened.
“You are not a party to this case.”
“I am a beneficiary of the trust,” Ruth replied.
Leah placed the archive record before the court.
Other victims listed in Ada’s files had also been named as contingent beneficiaries. As long as even one remained alive, Celeste could not take sole control.
Sloan called a recess.
Instead of returning to chambers, she left through a private exit.
Detective Harris followed but found her vehicle abandoned behind the courthouse.
On the driver’s seat lay a one-way airline ticket issued under a false name.
The courthouse clerk who scheduled the hearing had disappeared as well.
That afternoon, state investigators took control of the case. They searched Hale House for the vault mentioned in Celeste’s message.
No underground room appeared on the original building plans.
Ruth studied Ada’s ledger again.
“The house plans were changed during construction,” she said. “Ada once told me the dining room had two foundations.”
Nora moved the table.
Beneath the rug was a circular mark in the wooden floor.
Inside it, someone had recently scratched four words:
ONLY HER DAUGHTER CAN ENTER.
At that moment, the television turned on by itself.

Celeste appeared on the screen.
Behind her sat Benjamin.
