Chapter 35 - The House That Refused to Empty
Gabriel disappeared through a service corridor before Harris entered the building.
Ruth was freed, but the authorization seal on the table was a replica.
The real seal remained with Gabriel.
On the screens, the countdown continued.
Fifty-three minutes.
Leah discovered that the forty-three properties belonged to people whose claims had been stored inside Ada’s vault. Once transferred, the original owners would have to begin their cases again without the missing evidence.
Some had already spent years fighting.
Claire returned to Evelyn House and refused to leave.
Volunteers and former clients gathered outside, not to interfere with the officers, but to witness every document and record every action.
Inside Hale House, the same thing happened.
People who had received free legal help stood quietly along the sidewalk. Local reporters arrived. For the first time, Gabriel’s secret system was being observed publicly.
“He depends on private hearings and silent transfers,” Claire told Nora over the phone. “So we make everything visible.”
Ruth examined the forged Evelyn House deed.
The signature had been copied from Claire’s first nonprofit grant agreement. The original document should have remained in Evelyn House’s archive.
Naomi remembered that the agreement had briefly disappeared during an office renovation before being returned.
Gabriel had been preparing the forgery for years.
Martin searched Ada’s notes and found a reference to a “mirror index” created with Evelyn Brooks.
If the main vault records were removed, the mirror index could verify every claim.
Claire knew where Evelyn would have hidden it.
Beneath the white roses in the garden.
They removed a flat stone near the back wall and uncovered a sealed metal case. Inside were dozens of numbered cards and a small mechanical reader.
The cards contained no names, only codes.
Martin inserted the first one.
The reader printed a line confirming that the property claims in Ada’s vault had been copied and independently verified.
The countdown could be stopped.
Then Claire inserted the final card.
Instead of a property code, it printed a date.
Tomorrow.
Beneath it appeared a title:
THE PUBLIC EVICTION.
A second line followed.
THE FORTY-THREE HOUSES ARE ONLY THE TEST.
Claire looked at Nora through the video call.
“What happens tomorrow?”
Before Nora could answer, every screen in Marrowgate headquarters changed.
