Chapter 25 - The Door That Opened Itself
Police reached Ruth’s house shortly after midnight.
The rooms were empty. Her suitcase, medication, and family photographs were gone. There were no signs of a struggle.
On the kitchen table sat the blue folder that had first appeared inside Hale House.
This time, it contained a complete confession.
Ruth admitted that she had worked as Ada’s bookkeeper during the early years of Hale Property Management. She discovered Voss’s scheme before Ada did, but fear kept her silent.
When Celeste redirected the stolen money, Ruth helped conceal the transactions.
Years later, she gave Voss information about the protective trust because he promised to leave the remaining victims alone.
He broke that promise.
Ruth claimed the recent eviction notice against her had been genuine. Voss was removing the last person who could explain how the entire network began.
The final page contained directions to an abandoned train station outside Westbridge.
Nora, Leah, and Detective Harris arrived before dawn.
Inside the station, they found Benjamin alive. His hands were free, and no guards remained.
He said Celeste had released him.
“Where did she go?” Nora asked.
“To find Elise.”
“And Voss?”
Benjamin looked toward the empty platform.
“He was never the person giving the orders.”
A train approached even though the station had been closed for fifteen years.
It slowed but did not stop.
Through one illuminated window, Nora saw Ruth sitting beside Celeste. Elise was seated across from them.
A fourth person sat with their back to the glass.
As the final carriage passed, the stranger turned.
Nora recognized Judge Sloan.
The train disappeared into the darkness.
Benjamin handed Nora a sealed envelope Celeste had left behind.
Inside was a photograph taken during Ada’s final week of life. Ada sat at the dining table with Ruth, Celeste, Judge Sloan, and a man Nora did not recognize.
Written beneath them were the words:
THE FIVE ORIGINAL GUARDIANS.
One face had been cut from the photograph.
Leah called from Hale House.
“Nora, someone is inside the vault.”
“That’s impossible. The police sealed the building.”
“I’m watching the security feed. The vault door opened from the inside.”
Nora accessed the camera through her phone.
A man stepped from the underground chamber carrying Ada’s missing records.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then he placed his hand over the lens.
Before the screen went black, Nora heard him speak.
“Tell Benjamin his brother has come home.”
Benjamin stared at the silent phone.
Nora turned toward him.
“You told me you were an only child.”
Benjamin slowly backed away.
Behind Nora, the abandoned station doors locked by themselves.
Then a telephone began ringing inside the empty ticket office.
