Chapter 17 - The Room Behind the Wall

The hidden room was smaller than a closet.

It contained a desk, a tape recorder, four locked filing cabinets, and a telephone connected to a separate line. Dust covered everything except the receiver.

The telephone stopped ringing when Nora entered.

A second later, the answering machine activated.

“Hello, Nora.”

Celeste’s voice filled the room.

“I knew Ada would leave you enough clues to find this place.”

Nora pressed the playback button, but the machine was not playing a recording.

The line was live.

“Where is Benjamin?” Nora demanded.

“Safe, for now.”

“You are my mother.”

“I gave birth to you. Ada and Benjamin raised you. Those are different truths.”

“Why did everyone lie?”

“Because twenty-four years ago, Elias Voss needed leverage against me. You were that leverage.”

Celeste explained that Voss had used Hale Property Management to identify vulnerable owners. He then recruited relatives, caregivers, and spouses willing to challenge inheritances or manufacture transfers.

Ada discovered the operation and began collecting evidence.

Before she could expose him, Voss framed Celeste for embezzlement.

“The accident allowed me to disappear,” Celeste said. “But Ada kept the most important evidence inside that room.”

Nora unlocked the first cabinet.

It contained files documenting dozens of disputed property transfers dating back three decades. Some victims had lost houses, businesses, or entire estates.

The second cabinet contained financial records linking several judges, bank officers, and attorneys to companies controlled by Voss.

The third cabinet was empty.

“Where is the original deed?” Celeste asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Then Benjamin took it.”

Nora opened the fourth cabinet.

Inside was a photograph of Celeste holding a newborn child. Ada stood beside her.

Behind the photograph lay a list of twenty names.

Ruth Calder’s name was last.

Every other person on the list was dead.

“How did they die?” Nora asked.

The line became silent.

Then Celeste whispered, “That is why Ruth was told to stay quiet.”

A floorboard creaked outside the hidden room.

Leah was standing in the hallway.

Behind her stood Ruth.

Ruth held Ada’s missing ledger page.

“I think,” she said, “your grandmother expected me to finish what she started.”
