Chapter 13 - The Signature in the Margin
The call lasted only six seconds.
Police traced it to an internet service that concealed the original location. The voice recording was too short for immediate identification, but Nora did not need an expert to tell her what she had heard.
It carried Ada’s steady rhythm and slight hesitation before Ruth’s name.
Someone had studied her grandmother closely.
Leah requested emergency protection for Ruth’s property. Until a judge reviewed the disputed deed, the eviction was temporarily suspended.
That afternoon, Nora examined the old tenant ledger again. Ada’s triangles were not simple marks. Each contained a tiny letter written in one corner.
Ruth’s triangle contained an R.
The next contained an M.
When Nora copied the letters in order, they formed the beginning of a sentence:
REMEMBER THE NORTH WALL.
Nora and Leah entered Ada’s former study. The north wall was covered by a floor-to-ceiling bookcase that had not been moved in decades.
Behind the lowest shelf, Nora found a narrow brass key taped beneath the wood.
The key opened an old metal cash box in the attic.
Inside were canceled checks, property maps, photographs, and a handwritten list of addresses. Most matched the disputed homes in the blue folder.
At the bottom of the box lay a letter addressed to Nora’s father, Benjamin Hale.
Nora had not seen her father since she was seventeen. He had left Westbridge after a bitter argument with Ada and rarely contacted anyone.
The letter was never mailed.
Benjamin,
If anything happens to me, do not trust Elias Voss. He has found a way to take homes without appearing on a single deed. I kept proof, but one person inside our family has been helping him.
Nora turned the page.
The bottom half had been removed.
Leah picked up one of the photographs. It showed Ada standing beside Elias Voss at a company celebration more than twenty years earlier.
Behind them stood Nora’s father.
A circle had been drawn around his face.
On the back, Ada had written:
HE KNOWS WHERE THE ORIGINAL DEED IS.

At that exact moment, Nora’s phone displayed an incoming prison call.
The caller was her former husband, Mason Reed.
