Chapter 9 - What Evelyn Chose to Keep
The divorce was finalized six months later.
Robert attempted to challenge the trust, but the documents were clear. He had signed them decades earlier and benefited from them for years.
The court ordered him to repay part of the unauthorized spending. Several luxury items purchased for Marla were sold.
Marla avoided criminal charges by returning the jewelry and cooperating with investigators. She disappeared from Chicago’s social circles soon afterward.
Robert moved into a smaller residence near the city.
He gave one interview claiming Evelyn had manipulated him.
The interview received little sympathy. Video from the resort had already spread widely, showing him announcing that Evelyn was old and that everything belonged to him.
Public opinion favored the woman who had stood quietly while her husband destroyed his own reputation.
Evelyn returned the emerald bracelet to her safe but never wore it again.
The piece no longer represented twenty-five years of marriage.
It represented the moment she finally stopped doubting her instincts.
She made changes at Carter International.
Employee retirement benefits were expanded. Executive spending rules became stricter. Independent directors received greater authority. The company apartment Robert had used for private meetings was sold.
Evelyn also established the Carter Foundation for Older Women, providing legal and financial assistance to women facing exploitation by spouses or family members.
Margaret joined the foundation’s board.
At the opening ceremony, a reporter asked Evelyn whether she regretted waiting so long to confront Robert.
Evelyn considered the question.
“I regret the years I spent believing patience could change someone who benefited from my silence,” she said. “But I don’t regret choosing the right moment to speak.”
That evening, Evelyn returned to her mansion.
