Chapter 3 - The First Signature

Margaret arrived at Evelyn’s mansion carrying two briefcases and an expression that confirmed Evelyn’s worst fears.

They met in the private library after midnight.

Robert was supposedly attending a board dinner. According to Margaret’s investigator, he was at Marla’s penthouse.

Margaret arranged documents across the long walnut table.

“Robert has been moving money through three consulting companies,” she explained. “All three are connected to Marla.”

“How much?”

“Almost four million dollars so far.”

Evelyn absorbed the number without visible emotion.

Margaret continued.

“He also attempted to use company property as collateral for a private loan. The bank rejected the request because the ownership records did not match what he represented.”

“Did he sign my name?”

Margaret slid one page forward.

The signature resembled Evelyn’s, but the final curve of the C was too narrow.

Evelyn recognized the forgery instantly.

“There are more,” Margaret said. “He has submitted documents claiming that you approved the transfer of voting shares to him.”

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.

She had expected infidelity. She had prepared herself for humiliation.

She had not expected Robert to risk the company they had built together.

“What does he believe he owns?” Evelyn asked.

“Everything.”

Margaret almost smiled.

“He does not?”

“No.”

Thirty years earlier, after Robert made a reckless investment that nearly destroyed the company, Evelyn’s father had helped restructure the family assets. The controlling shares were placed in a trust. Robert received income and executive authority, but he never gained ownership of the core assets.

Evelyn became the trust’s sole controlling beneficiary after her father died.

Robert had signed the agreement without reading it carefully. He had been too proud to admit he did not understand the structure.

“Can we stop him now?” Evelyn asked.

“Yes.”

“Then don’t.”

Margaret looked surprised.

Evelyn touched the forged signature.

“If we confront him privately, he’ll deny everything. He’ll blame advisers, accountants, or Marla. I want him to reveal exactly what he intends to do.”

“That could be painful.”

“He has already made it painful.”

Evelyn looked toward the family portrait hanging over the fireplace.

“I spent fifty years protecting his dignity. I won’t spend another day protecting his lies.”
