Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Reckoning
Two days later, the Carter International board assembled in Chicago.
Robert arrived with a newly hired attorney and demanded that the meeting be postponed.
The board refused.
Evelyn sat at the head of the table for the first time in twenty-seven years.
Margaret presented the evidence in chronological order.
Unauthorized payments to Marla’s companies.
Personal expenses disguised as corporate events.
Attempts to borrow against trust-owned property.
Forged approvals.
Plans to remove Evelyn from the board by claiming she lacked mental capacity.
The last document caused the greatest reaction.
Robert had asked a private physician to prepare a statement suggesting Evelyn was confused and unable to make financial decisions. The physician refused.
Robert’s attorney leaned toward him and whispered urgently.
Robert ignored the advice.
“Evelyn has never managed daily operations,” he argued. “Without me, this company would not exist.”
Evelyn opened a leather folder.
Inside were records from the company’s earliest years.
Her original investment agreement.
Her negotiations with the company’s first national client.
Letters from banks confirming that she personally guaranteed loans when Robert’s expansion plans failed.
Minutes showing that she prevented the company from being sold during a financial crisis.
One board member looked at Robert.
“You told us you founded the company alone.”
Robert’s silence answered the accusation.
The vote was called.
Nine members supported Robert’s permanent removal.
One abstained.
Nobody voted for him.
Robert lost his executive position, company apartment, corporate aircraft privileges, staff, and control of every account.
He retained a limited retirement payment protected under his original employment agreement.
It was enough for a comfortable life.
It was not enough to maintain the illusion of unlimited power.
As security collected his company phone and access cards, Robert looked toward Evelyn.
“You took everything from me.”
