Chapter 1 - The Anniversary Celebration

Three weeks earlier, Evelyn Carter stood before the tall windows of her Chicago mansion and watched workers prepare the grounds for her fiftieth wedding anniversary.
White flowers arrived by the truckload. Crystal glasses were unpacked in the ballroom. A designer adjusted linen samples while the family chef discussed a menu inspired by Robert and Evelyn’s travels.
To everyone else, the celebration appeared to be proof of an extraordinary marriage.
Evelyn knew better.
Robert had become distant during the previous year. He spent more nights at the company’s downtown apartment and returned home carrying unfamiliar perfume on his jackets. He guarded his phone, changed passwords, and became impatient whenever Evelyn asked about business.
For months, she had told herself that fifty years of marriage could survive a difficult season.
That belief ended when she opened her jewelry safe.
The emerald-cut bracelet was missing.
Robert had given it to her on their twenty-fifth anniversary. It was not the most expensive piece in her collection, but it had once meant something.
Evelyn checked the inventory book twice. The safe showed no signs of damage. Only three people knew the access code: Evelyn, Robert, and their longtime security manager.
She contacted the security manager privately.
He confirmed that Robert had entered the dressing room while Evelyn attended a charity luncheon. The hallway camera showed him leaving seven minutes later with a small velvet box in his hand.
“Should I report it?” the manager asked.
“Not yet,” Evelyn replied.
That evening, Robert returned home cheerful and unusually attentive.
He kissed Evelyn’s cheek and praised the anniversary arrangements. Then he suggested moving the celebration from Chicago to an exclusive beachfront resort owned partly by Carter International.
“It will be warmer,” he explained. “More impressive. Everyone important will be there.”
Evelyn studied the man she had loved since she was twenty-three.
For the first time, she wondered whether the party was not intended to celebrate their marriage.
Perhaps Robert was planning to end it.
“Of course,” she said softly. “Invite everyone.”
Robert smiled, believing she suspected nothing.
After he left the room, Evelyn called Margaret Harrison.
“I need you to review every document Robert has signed this year,” she said.
Margaret paused.
“Do you believe he is hiding something?”

Evelyn looked at the empty space inside her jewelry safe.
“Yes,” she answered. “And I think he’s about to make a very public mistake.”
