Chapter 32 - the line Malcolm crossed

The folder contained eleven years of correspondence.
At first, Malcolm appeared reluctant. Gideon had approached him after Elias discovered the missing licensing money. Gideon warned that the scandal would destroy Vale Meridian and send several executives to prison.
Malcolm agreed to conceal part of the evidence.
Later messages showed something worse.
After Nora’s father died, Malcolm began asking how much power he could gain if Elias never returned. He authorized payments to maintain Elias’s false identity abroad and instructed investigators to report any attempt Elias made to contact Nora.
Malcolm had not designed the original theft.
He had chosen to profit from it.
Nora read every message without speaking.
Owen left the room twice, unable to watch his father’s language become colder over time.
One email was dated on Nora and Malcolm’s fortieth anniversary.
She suspects nothing. Keep the brother quiet until the trust is transferred.
Another was written six months earlier.
Once Nora is declared incapable, Celeste can manage the foundation events while I consolidate voting control.
Nora closed the computer.
Grace asked whether she wanted Malcolm arrested immediately.
“Not yet.”
“You have evidence of fraud, obstruction and conspiracy.”
“I also have twenty-two thousand employees who could lose their jobs if the company collapses overnight.”
“You are still protecting him.”
“No. I am protecting everyone he used as a shield.”
Nora ordered the audit team to isolate the illegal accounts and prepare a controlled disclosure to regulators. Malcolm would not learn the full contents of the drive until the company was protected from his removal.
That evening, he came to Bell Street.
He stood in the doorway where he had once carried Nora after their wedding.
“You found the case,” he said.
“You knew it was here?”
“I knew your father hid something. I never knew where.”
“You monitored Elias for eleven years.”
Malcolm entered and closed the door.
“I kept him alive.”
“You kept him silent.”
“Gideon would have killed him.”
“You could have told me.”
“And watched you confront Gideon without evidence?”
“You allowed me to grieve my living brother.”
Malcolm’s voice broke.
“I thought I could repair everything after I gained control.”

Nora placed the printed emails between them.
“You did gain control. This is what you chose to do with it.”
