Chapter 25 - harbor seven

Rain covered the harbor in silver as Nora’s car approached Warehouse Seven.

Grace had arranged for private security to remain two streets away. Nora refused to bring the police. If Elias was being forced to cooperate, a visible arrest operation could make him disappear again.

Owen sat beside her.

“You should stay in the car,” Nora said.

“You spent years protecting everyone while we believed Dad was protecting you. I am not leaving.”

The warehouse door stood open.

Inside, rows of abandoned shipping containers formed narrow corridors. At the center of the building, an old cassette recorder waited on a wooden table.

No one else was visible.

Nora pressed play.

Her father’s voice filled the warehouse.

“If this recording has been found, Gideon has already begun removing the people who know how Vale Meridian was built.”

Nora gripped the table.

Her father explained that Katherine had developed the process responsible for the company’s earliest success. Gideon persuaded her to place the patents under corporate control, promising the family would always retain ownership.

Years later, Gideon created hidden companies and redirected licensing revenue. When Elias discovered the scheme, Gideon threatened to frame him for financial crimes.

“I told Elias to leave,” her father said on the recording. “His death was arranged to protect him. I believed I could expose Gideon before Nora learned the truth.”

The tape crackled.

“I was wrong.”

A sound came from behind one of the containers.

Owen moved in front of Nora, but she pushed gently past him.

Elias emerged from the darkness.

He was older, thinner and carrying the weight of eleven missing years in his face. The scar beside his left eye was new, but Nora recognized the way he held one shoulder slightly higher than the other.

She crossed the distance between them and struck him across the face.

Elias did not defend himself.

“You let me bury you,” she said.

“I know.”

“You watched me raise my children believing you were dead.”

“I know.”

“Why did you not come home?”

“Because Malcolm told Gideon every time I tried.”

Nora’s breath caught.

Elias reached into his coat and placed a document on the table.

It was a copy of the incapacity petition.

At the bottom, beside Malcolm’s signature, was another name.

Owen Vale.
