Chapter 4 - An Invitation with Two Meanings
The resort invitations arrived in heavy ivory envelopes.
Robert had changed the wording without consulting Evelyn.
Instead of describing the event as a fiftieth anniversary celebration, the invitation called it A Celebration of New Beginnings.
Several friends contacted Evelyn to ask what the phrase meant.
“You’ll understand at the party,” she told them.
Robert appeared delighted by her cooperation. He assumed she remained unaware of his plan.
Behind his back, Evelyn and Margaret worked quickly.
Margaret gathered bank statements, security recordings, company records, property deeds, jewelry inventories, and copies of Robert’s messages to Marla.
Evelyn reviewed each item personally.
The messages were the hardest.
Robert mocked her age. He described her as fragile, confused, and incapable of managing business affairs. He promised Marla that Evelyn would be removed from the board within a month.
In one message, Marla asked whether Evelyn might challenge them.
Robert replied, She has no idea how anything works.
Evelyn read the sentence three times.
For decades, she had corrected Robert’s mistakes before they reached the public. She had persuaded banks to extend deadlines, convinced partners to remain loyal, and protected employees whenever Robert’s pride threatened negotiations.
Robert had interpreted her silence as ignorance.
Margaret wanted to cancel Robert’s company authority immediately.
Evelyn refused.
“Not until he speaks at the resort.”
“You want witnesses.”
“I want the truth to leave his own mouth.”
They prepared two sets of documents.
The first was a court petition requesting an emergency freeze on accounts connected to Robert’s unauthorized transfers.
The second was a board resolution removing him as chief executive if he publicly claimed sole ownership or attempted to dispose of trust assets.
Five board members had already agreed to support Evelyn.
The resort celebration became a carefully prepared stage.
