Chapter 28 - the doctor’s file
Dr. Samuel Reeve had treated Nora after a minor concussion five years earlier.
He had never diagnosed memory loss or dementia. Nevertheless, a new medical file bearing his signature described Nora as increasingly confused, impulsive and unable to understand complex financial decisions.
Grace requested the original records.
The clinic claimed they had been destroyed during a software migration.
Maya found Dr. Reeve at a private rehabilitation center outside the city. He had resigned from medicine three months earlier and refused every call.
Nora visited him alone.
Reeve opened the door but did not invite her inside.
“I cannot help you.”
“You signed a report declaring me mentally incapable.”
His face turned pale.
“I was told the document would remain confidential.”
“False evidence does not become acceptable because it is hidden.”
Reeve glanced toward a vehicle parked across the road.
“Gideon paid my son’s legal expenses. Then he threatened to reopen the case.”
“What case?”
“My son caused an accident. No one died, but he left the scene. Gideon made the charge disappear.”
“And in return, you helped steal my company.”
Reeve looked down.
“I examined you once. I altered the notes later.”
“Will you testify?”
“No.”
Nora could have threatened him. Instead, she handed him a card containing Grace’s number.
“Gideon protects people only while they are useful. The moment my removal succeeds, he will destroy everyone who can connect him to it.”
Reeve stared at the card.
“You cannot defeat him. Your father tried.”
“My father tried alone.”
When Nora returned to her car, Maya called.
The board had scheduled an emergency meeting for that afternoon. Malcolm planned to present the medical report and request immediate authority over Nora’s trust.
“He has already invited reporters,” Maya said.
“Then let them come.”
At the meeting, Malcolm displayed selected pages from Reeve’s false report. Several directors avoided looking at Nora.
Gideon sat at the far end of the table, appearing concerned rather than victorious.
Nora waited until Malcolm finished.
Then she activated Northstar.
Maya stood beside her as the second Vale descendant, satisfying the bloodline requirement.
