Chapter 35 - the inheritance no one expected
Maya’s pendant contained a second mechanism.
When Grace pressed its outer ring and turned the compass north, a narrow strip of microfilm slid from the back. It contained an amendment to the Northstar trust.
If Nora and Elias could not act together, the deciding authority passed to Katherine’s eldest grandchild.
Maya.
Nora read the amendment slowly.
Her father had anticipated division between his children. Instead of choosing one, he had placed the final decision in the hands of the next generation.
“You can approve the use of Northstar’s dormant reserve,” Grace explained.
The reserve consisted of licensing payments secretly held in escrow for decades. With interest, it exceeded four hundred million dollars.
The money had remained untouched because Gideon never found the amendment authorizing its release.
Maya signed the resolution.
Northstar purchased the Vale Meridian debt seven minutes before Gideon’s company could submit its final bid.
The boardroom remained silent when the confirmation appeared.
Gideon called Nora immediately.
“You have made a catastrophic decision.”
“I repaid the company’s debt.”
“You exposed Northstar.”
“No. I proved that you never controlled it.”
“You think this ends with a financial transaction?”
“It ends when the evidence reaches the regulators.”
Gideon’s politeness disappeared.
“Your father begged me to protect you from the truth.”
“My father left the truth in three different places because he knew you would destroy one.”
“He was weak.”
“He was afraid. There is a difference.”
Gideon ended the call.
Celebration spread through the building, but Nora remained cautious. Gideon had lost the debt, the trustee vote and control over Northstar. A man like him would not retreat while he still possessed secrets.
Elias arrived after midnight.
“You used Maya to take what belongs to me,” he accused.
“Maya made her own decision.”
“She is twenty-eight. She knows nothing about what our family did.”
“She knows enough not to sell the company to the person who destroyed us.”
Elias placed a photograph on Nora’s desk.
It showed Katherine meeting privately with Gideon.
The date was six months after the patent agreement.
