Chapter 6 - the key inside the rabbit

Mr. Buttons had belonged to Richard Mercer.

It was a simple stuffed rabbit with gray fabric, one bent ear and black button eyes. Daniel remembered seeing it in his father’s study when he was a child.

Richard kept it on a shelf beside old family photographs.

After Richard died, a package arrived for Daniel and Claire. Inside was the rabbit and a card.

For my grandchild. Every child deserves one loyal friend.

Daniel had never examined it closely.

Now he sat at the kitchen table while Claire carefully checked every seam.

Near the base of one ear, she found a line of newer stitching.

Daniel opened it with small scissors.

Hidden beneath the stuffing was a narrow silver key.

A number was engraved on one side.

317.

Claire placed a hand over her mouth.

“He knew.”

“He planned this before Lily was born.”

Daniel searched the original package but found no further message.

Nathan traced the number to a private deposit facility in the city. Box 317 had been rented by Richard Mercer seventeen years earlier.

The listed emergency contact was Arthur Vale.

“We go there today,” Daniel said.

Nathan shook his head.

“You cannot access it without authorization.”

“I have the key.”

“You also need identification matching the account.”

“The owner is dead.”

“Then the executor controls access.”

“My mother.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel stared at the small key on Nathan’s desk.

“Could Vale access it?”

“As emergency contact, possibly. It depends on the agreement.”

“Then why ask Lily whether she had the key?”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“Because he does not know where it is.”

They returned the key to Mr. Buttons and replaced the stitching as neatly as possible. Daniel then purchased an identical gray rabbit from an online collector.

The replacement would arrive on the morning of the party.

Until then, Lily stayed home from preschool.

Claire objected at first, but when the school reviewed its cameras, they found Arthur Vale entering through a side door with a temporary visitor badge.

The badge had been authorized by Lily’s grandmother.

Margaret claimed Vale wanted to deliver a birthday gift.

The school suspended the employee who allowed him near Lily, but no law had clearly been broken. He had asked a child a question and left.

Still, Daniel filed a formal report.

Margaret called him five minutes later.

“You embarrassed me,” she said.

Daniel recorded the conversation.

“You sent your attorney to question my daughter without permission.”

“Arthur is an old family friend.”

“He asked about a key.”

Silence.

Then Margaret laughed.

“Children invent things.”

“Lily does not know Arthur’s name.”

“Claire probably showed her a photograph.”

“Why would Claire do that?”

“Because your wife is confused more often than you realize.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.

There it was.

The provocation.

Nathan had warned him not to react.

Daniel kept his voice level.

“You will not contact Lily’s school again.”

“I do not need your permission to care about my granddaughter.”

“You need my permission to approach my child.”

Margaret’s voice became colder.

“Bring her on Saturday.”

“Why?”

“Because if you do not, Claire’s former medical history will reach every parent at that school by Monday.”

Daniel did not answer.

Margaret continued.

“You cannot protect both of them. Eventually, one will become too heavy.”

The call ended.

Daniel saved the recording in three locations.

When he told Claire, she became calm.

Not frightened.

Calm.

“I want to wear the cream dress,” she said.

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“Your mother chose it because she wants me to look like part of her family.”

“You do not have to wear anything she sent.”

“I know.”

Claire looked toward Lily, who sat on the floor building a tower from wooden blocks.

“But if Margaret believes I am still under her control, she may speak freely around me.”

Daniel recognized the determination in his wife’s face.

“You want to make her trust you.”

“I want her to underestimate me.”

At one the next afternoon, the replacement rabbit arrived.

Daniel removed the hidden key from the original and placed the toy in a locked safe.

He gave the copy to Lily.

She immediately noticed.

“This is not Mr. Buttons.”

Daniel crouched beside her.

“He is Mr. Buttons’ cousin.”

Lily studied the rabbit.

“His ear is wrong.”

“We need you to take care of him for one afternoon.”

“Where is Mr. Buttons?”

“Somewhere safe.”

Lily considered this and nodded.

At 1:42, they drove toward the Mercer estate.

At 1:47, Daniel received a photograph from an unknown number.

It showed the real Mr. Buttons inside Daniel’s home safe.

Beneath the photograph were six words.

The key is not safe either.
