THE PARTY THAT ENDED A FAMILY / Chapter 12 / 40

Chapter 12 - the woman who finally spoke

Nora contacted Daniel from a motel outside the city.

She agreed to meet only if Margaret, Tessa and Vale were not told.

Nathan arranged the meeting in a private conference room.

Nora arrived wearing a baseball cap and carrying a canvas bag.

She appeared exhausted.

“I am sorry about your house,” she said.

Daniel remained standing.

“You installed a camera in my bedroom.”

“No. Vale did.”

“You used my wife’s code.”

“To remove the rabbit before his driver reached it.”

“You could have warned me.”

“I tried.”

“The gift bag?”

Nora nodded.

“I sent the shirt back to you.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You sent that cruel shirt?”

“I found a box of them in Tessa’s office. I sent one with the note because I needed you to understand they were planning to provoke you.”

“You could have written a clear warning.”

“Vale was monitoring messages, calls and deliveries. Anything direct would have exposed me.”

Nathan leaned forward.

“Start at the beginning.”

Nora had worked in Mercer Holdings’ accounting division for six years. Eight months earlier, she noticed repeated payments to Vale Strategic Services.

The payments were categorized as estate consulting fees, but the amounts increased after Richard’s trust amendment became relevant.

Nora investigated quietly.

She found payments to Adam Reeves, the former courier driver and a private surveillance company.

She also found a draft plan titled Reconciliation Event.

The plan listed five goals.

Separate Daniel from Lily.

Create visible distress.

Provoke aggressive behavior.

Secure Claire’s cooperation.

File emergency guardianship petition before midnight.

Claire closed her eyes.

Nora continued.

“I wanted to take the files to the police, but Margaret controls the company’s legal department. Vale told me that if I accused them without proof, I would be prosecuted for stealing confidential records.”

“So you waited?” Daniel asked.

“I copied everything I could.”

She opened the canvas bag and removed a hard drive.

“The day before the party, they discovered someone had accessed the files. I knew they would search my apartment. I entered your house because I believed the key was inside the rabbit.”

“You knew about the key?”

“Richard told my father years ago that he hid proof where only an innocent person would look.”

Daniel remembered Mr. Buttons sitting in his father’s study.

“Why put the rabbit in Nathan’s office?”

“Because Vale had already arranged a search of your house after the party. He planned to claim you stole trust property.”

“The rabbit was mine.”

“The rabbit belonged to Richard’s estate. At least, that is what Vale intended to argue.”

Nathan examined the hard drive.

“Where is the original Reconciliation Event plan?”

“On there.”

“Anything else?”

Nora’s face changed.

“Yes.”

She removed a sealed plastic sleeve containing a handwritten letter.

It was addressed to Daniel.

Richard had written it seventeen days before his death.

Daniel opened it.

Son,

If you are reading this, Margaret has already learned that I changed the trust.

I spent years pretending that silence kept this family together. It did not. Silence only made fear easier to inherit.

The company should not belong to the person most willing to control it. It should belong to the one who knows when to walk away.

Your child will receive the trust, but you must decide whether receiving it is a gift or another kind of prison.

Do not trust the first document Arthur gives you.

There are two amendments.

Daniel stopped reading.

“Two?”

Nathan took the letter.

“The envelope from the party contained only one.”

Nora nodded.

“The second amendment is inside Box 317.”

Daniel touched the sole of his shoe, where the silver key remained hidden.

“What does it say?”

“I do not know.”

“Does Margaret?”

“She knows it exists, but not its full terms.”

“Vale is the emergency contact.”

“He cannot open the box without the key and proof that the first beneficiary condition has been met.”

“Lily turning four.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at the canvas bag.

“Then why did Vale help Margaret? As special trustee, he already had power.”

Nora’s expression filled with fear.

“Because Arthur Vale is not the special trustee named in the second amendment.”

“Who is?”

May you like

Nora looked directly at Daniel.

“You are.”
