Chapter 29 - the list of childrenThere were twenty-three names in Thomas’s files.

Some children had been taken from mothers who were threatened into signing papers. Others had been transferred between guardians to conceal trust fraud.
Nora created a secure database.
Rose contacted federal investigators.
Claire sat beside her father while he described every choice he had made.
“You could have come back,” she said.
“I was afraid.”
“So you let me mourn you.”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
Fear had protected his life, but it had wounded everyone around him.
Daniel recognized the pattern.
Margaret had called control protection.
Tessa had called betrayal loyalty.
Thomas had called disappearance sacrifice.
The words changed.
The damage did not.
That evening, Daniel told Claire he would understand if she needed distance.
“From you?” she asked.
“From all of this.”
Claire looked toward Lily and Emma, who were building a cardboard castle.
“I spent months accusing you of using distance as punishment.”
“I was not always right.”
“No. But you knew your family could turn love into leverage.”
She took his hand.
“I am not leaving. But we are not hiding anything again.”
Daniel agreed.
The following morning, investigators arrived for Thomas.
Before leaving, he gave Claire one final envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Richard, Rose and a newborn child.
