Chapter 27 - the mother emma did not recognizeEmma did not recognize Rose.

When Rose entered the room, Emma hid behind Claire.
“I am your mother,” Rose said.
Emma shook her head.
“My mommy has brown hair.”
Rose’s hair had once been brown. Years in hiding and months of illness had changed her.
She showed Emma a photograph from before the illegal guardianship.
Emma looked at it without expression.
Daniel understood that legal truth could not recreate memory.
Rose stayed in a nearby apartment and visited for one hour each day.
She never forced Emma to call her anything.
On the seventh day, Emma asked why Rose had left.
“I did not leave you,” Rose said. “But I was not strong enough to bring you home.”
Emma considered this.
“Are you strong now?”
“I am trying.”
Emma handed her the hospital bracelet.
“Then you can keep this until I know.”
Rose accepted it.
Across town, Margaret awaited trial. Arthur Vale had agreed to testify. Samuel refused to speak.
The family appeared to be safe.
Then Nora found a recurring payment from Mercer Holdings to Claire’s father.
The payments had begun before Daniel and Claire met.
Daniel looked at his wife.
Claire stared at the screen.
