THE PARTY THAT ENDED A FAMILY / Chapter 15 / 40

Chapter 15 - the name lily remembered

The second note had been hidden more carefully than the key.

Daniel found a narrow opening beneath the stitching of Mr. Buttons’ left ear. Inside was a strip of paper wrapped around a tiny photograph.

The picture showed two babies lying beside each other beneath yellow blankets.

One was Lily.

Daniel recognized the hospital bracelet around her wrist.

The other baby was slightly older.

On the back, Richard had written:

The trust begins with the child who remains and ends with the child who was taken.

Claire read the sentence twice.

“Lily was never taken.”

“No,” Daniel said.

The second baby had been.

Evelyn sat silently across the room.

Daniel placed the photograph on the table in front of her.

“Who is this child?”

“I do not know the name being used now.”

“Then tell me the original name.”

Evelyn looked toward the hallway, as though expecting Margaret to appear despite the protective order.

“Richard believed someone inside Mercer Holdings was using family trusts to hide money. He discovered that Arthur Vale had created false beneficiaries and redirected assets.”

“We found those ledgers.”

“The fraud began long before Lily was born. Rose Bennett discovered it first.”

“The woman in the photograph.”

“Yes. She worked in Vale’s office.”

“What happened to her?”

“She disappeared after giving Richard evidence.”

Claire’s hand moved protectively toward Lily.

“And the baby?”

“Rose had a daughter.”

Daniel looked at the two children in the photograph.

“How could her daughter be beside Lily in the hospital?”

“Because Rose returned four years ago. She believed someone was following her. Richard arranged for both babies to be photographed as proof that the two family lines still existed.”

“What family lines?”

Evelyn looked directly at Daniel.

“Rose’s daughter was Richard’s child.”

The words settled heavily over the room.

Daniel had a younger half-sister.

And she had a child close to Lily’s age.

“Does Margaret know?” Claire asked.

“She knew Richard had been involved with Rose before their marriage. She did not know about the daughter until after Richard died.”

“Then she found out.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Arthur Vale.”

Daniel understood why the second amendment had disappeared.

The trust did not pass only to Lily.

Another child had a claim.

Nora opened her laptop.

“If Rose’s daughter is Richard’s biological child, then her child could be the second beneficiary.”

“Which means Margaret may have spent four years searching for both children,” Nathan said over the phone.

Lily climbed onto Daniel’s lap.

She touched the second baby’s face in the photograph.

“I know her.”

Every adult turned toward her.

Daniel kept his voice gentle.

“You know the baby?”

“No. She is big now.”

“Where did you see her?”

“At Grandma’s house.”

Evelyn went pale.

“When?”

Lily looked toward the cardboard house, concentrating.

“The day before my birthday.”

“You were not at Grandma’s house the day before your birthday,” Claire said.

Lily shook her head.

“Grandma showed me on the phone.”

“What did she show you?”

“A girl with yellow ribbons.”

Daniel placed the photograph on the table.

“Did Grandma tell you her name?”

Lily nodded.

“What was it?”

“Emma.”

Nora began searching through the recovered company files.

Hundreds of payments filled the screen.

One name appeared repeatedly in a hidden account connected to Vale Strategic Services.

Bennett Child Placement Foundation.

Nathan’s voice sharpened through the speaker.

“That organization closed three years ago.”

“What did it do?” Claire asked.

“It arranged private guardianships and international adoptions.”

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

“Are you saying Rose’s granddaughter was adopted?”

“Possibly under another identity.”

Nora searched the payment records.

One recent transfer had been made only six days earlier.

The recipient was a private school sixty miles away.

Emma Caldwell.

Age four.

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Was that the name Grandma used?”

Lily nodded.

“She said Emma was bad.”

“Why?”

“Because Emma would not tell Grandma where her mommy went.”

Evelyn stood abruptly.

“Rose may still be alive.”

Before anyone could respond, Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered without speaking.

A child was crying softly on the other end.

Then a woman whispered, “Is this Daniel Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Rose Bennett.”

Everyone in the room froze.

Rose continued in a strained voice.

“Arthur Vale took the letter from Box 317, but he did not find the recording. Richard gave it to me.”

“Where are you?”

“I cannot tell you.”

“Is Emma with you?”

A pause.

“No.”

Daniel stood.

“Who has her?”

“I thought Margaret did. But Margaret was only following instructions.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Whose instructions?”

Before Rose could answer, a man’s voice sounded in the background.

The call disconnected.

Daniel immediately dialed back.

The number no longer existed.

Nora searched the company files again.

Claire held Lily closer.

Evelyn stared at the old photograph.

Then Lily whispered, “Daddy, that was him.”

Daniel lowered the phone.

“Who?”

“The man beside the patio doors.”

“Arthur Vale?”

Lily shook her head.

“No. The other man.”

“There was another man?”

Lily pointed toward the final frame of the balloon-camera recording on Nathan’s laptop.

Behind Arthur Vale, reflected faintly in the glass patio door, stood a tall man wearing a dark blue suit.

His face was partially hidden.

But one hand rested against the glass.

On his finger was Richard Mercer’s missing signet ring.

Daniel enlarged the image.

Evelyn gasped.

Claire turned toward her.

“You recognize him.”

Evelyn did not answer.

Daniel looked more closely at the reflection.

The man had his father’s eyes.

Then a new message appeared on Daniel’s phone.

Do not search for Emma.

The next message contained a live photograph of the Mercer estate.

Someone was standing inside Richard’s old study.

The third message arrived seconds later.

You protected one child.

Now decide which child inherits the truth.

Daniel reached for his keys.

Outside, a black sedan stopped across the street.

Its rear door opened.

May you like

A little girl wearing yellow ribbons stepped onto the pavement alone.

Behind her, the sedan accelerated and disappeared into the night.
