THE PARTY THAT ENDED A FAMILY / Chapter 30 / 40

Chapter 30 - the woman who had lied longestEvelyn was Richard and Rose’s daughter.

Not merely a witness.

Not merely a former employee.

Daniel confronted her in Nora’s office.

Evelyn did not deny it.

Rose stared at the woman she had been told died shortly after birth.

Margaret had arranged for the baby to be removed and raised under another identity. Years later, Evelyn unknowingly returned to work for Mercer Holdings.

Richard eventually recognized her through a birthmark and secretly confirmed her identity.

“You knew Richard was your father,” Daniel said.

“For eleven years.”

“And you said nothing.”

“He asked me not to.”

Rose’s voice broke.

“He knew I was alive.”

“He believed Samuel would kill you if the family connection became public.”

Daniel looked at the photograph of the two babies.

Emma was Evelyn’s daughter.

Rose was Emma’s grandmother.

“Who is Emma’s father?” Claire asked.

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“Arthur Vale’s son.”

The fraud had bound every family together.

Evelyn had hidden Emma after discovering Vale’s accounts. Samuel found the child and used her to force Evelyn’s silence.

Rose crossed the room slowly.

She touched Evelyn’s face.

“I searched for you.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I know.”

Neither woman called the other mother or daughter.
