“If we open the door, Samuel gets inside the trust chamber.”
“There is no trust chamber,” Daniel said.
“Yes, there is.”
Richard had built a secure archive beneath the fountain. It contained the original trust documents, shareholder certificates and evidence against Samuel.
The two keys opened both the tunnel and the archive.
Samuel had used Tessa to bring the second key.
Water reached their knees.
Rose grabbed Tessa’s necklace.
They struggled until the chain broke.
Daniel inserted both keys.
Two locks clicked.
The water stopped rising.
A section of the wall opened, revealing a steel archive door.
Samuel stood on the other side.
He had been waiting for them to open it.
Nathan charged, but Samuel fired once.
Nathan fell.
Daniel reached him as Samuel seized the document case from the archive.
Tessa stared at her uncle.
“You said no one would be hurt.”
Samuel smiled.
“No. You said that.”
He locked them inside and walked away.
Nathan’s wound was high in the shoulder. Rose pressed her coat against it.
Daniel searched the archive.
Samuel had taken the original trust—but left dozens of tapes.
