Chapter 14 - the box that should have been sealed
Daniel still had the silver key.
The deposit facility insisted Box 317 had been opened using an authorized duplicate.
Security footage showed Arthur Vale entering the building at 8:03 that morning, two hours before his professional suspension became official.
He carried a leather briefcase.
He left eleven minutes later without it.
Police detained him at his office.
The briefcase was not found.
Vale claimed the box had been empty.
No one believed him.
Nathan filed an emergency order granting Daniel access to the deposit records. By evening, Daniel, Claire and two investigators stood inside the private facility.
Box 317 was narrow and deep.
Inside remained a single photograph.
It showed Richard Mercer sitting at his desk with three documents arranged in front of him. Arthur Vale stood on one side. A woman Daniel did not recognize stood on the other.
On the back, Richard had written a date and a sentence.
The true trustee must know why Lily was chosen.
Claire studied the woman in the photograph.
“She looks familiar.”
Daniel examined her face.
She was perhaps forty in the picture, with dark hair and serious eyes. A silver pendant hung from her neck.
“Who is she?” Daniel asked.
Nathan photographed the image.
“I will find out.”
The deposit facility provided an inventory from the last time Richard accessed the box.
It listed five items.
One sealed trust amendment.
One recorded statement.
One set of corporate ledgers.
One silver pendant.
One letter addressed to Lily Mercer.
All five were missing.
The silver pendant in the inventory appeared identical to the one worn by the unknown woman.
Daniel remembered Nora’s warning.
Arthur Vale was not named as special trustee in the second amendment.
Daniel was.
But Richard’s message suggested that even Daniel did not understand the full reason Lily had been selected.
The investigation moved quickly after that.
Police recovered Vale’s briefcase from a storage room beneath Mercer Holdings. The corporate ledgers were inside, along with evidence that Margaret had redirected millions of dollars from the trust into private accounts.
The recorded statement and second amendment were missing.
So was the letter to Lily.
Margaret was removed from Mercer Holdings by an emergency vote.
Tessa resigned before the board could dismiss her.
Vale was charged with multiple offenses related to fraud, unlawful surveillance and interference with trust assets.
Margaret faced charges of conspiracy, attempted coercion and financial misconduct.
Daniel did not celebrate.
He watched the news reports from the living room while Lily built a cardboard house around Mr. Buttons.
The real rabbit had been returned after investigators confirmed the key compartment.
Claire sat beside Daniel.
“Your mother lost the company.”
“She lost control of it.”
“Is there a difference?”
“To her, no.”
Claire rested her head against his shoulder.
“What will you do if the trust belongs to Lily?”
“Protect it until she is old enough to decide.”
“And the company?”
“Sell it, restructure it or give the employees control. Anything except letting it become another weapon.”
Claire smiled faintly.
“That sounds like the reason Richard chose you.”
Daniel looked at the photograph of the unknown woman.
“Then why did he write that Lily was chosen?”
Before Claire answered, the doorbell rang.
Nora stood outside.
Behind her was Henry and an elderly woman named Evelyn Mercer, Richard’s younger sister.
Evelyn had not attended the birthday party.
She had lived overseas for more than twenty years.
When Daniel showed her the photograph, she sat down slowly.
“I knew she would come back,” Evelyn whispered.
“Who is she?” Daniel asked.
Evelyn touched the woman’s face in the photograph.
“Her name is Rose Bennett.”
“Was she connected to the company?”
“No.”
“To my father?”
“Yes.”
Daniel waited.
Evelyn looked toward Lily.
“Before your father married Margaret, Rose was the person he intended to spend his life with.”
Claire glanced at Daniel.
“Why is she named in the trust?”
“She is not.”
“Then why was she present when he signed the second amendment?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because she was there to protect the other child.”
The room became silent.
Daniel spoke first.
“What other child?”
Evelyn looked down at her hands.
“I promised Richard I would never tell you unless Margaret tried to take Lily.”
“She did.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me.”
Evelyn raised her eyes.
“Your father created the trust for two branches of the Mercer family. Lily is only the first child to activate it.”
“Who activates the second part?”
Evelyn did not answer.
A soft voice came from the cardboard house.
“Daddy?”

“There is paper in his other ear.”
