Chapter 22 - the sister who chose the wrong sideDaniel froze.
Tessa’s hand shook, but the weapon remained pointed at Rose.
“You were working with Samuel,” Daniel said.
“I was trying to protect the family.”
“You helped him take Emma.”
“I moved her before Margaret could.”
Rose laughed bitterly.
“You delivered my daughter directly to him.”
Tessa’s expression cracked.
Samuel had promised her control of Mercer Holdings after Margaret was removed. He had told her Daniel planned to transfer everything to Claire and leave Tessa with nothing.
“You believed him?” Daniel asked.
“I believed what everyone always proved. You leave. I stay. You return when something belongs to you.”
Nathan moved slowly along the tunnel wall.
Tessa noticed.
“Stop.”
Rose stepped between them.
The gun fired.
The bullet struck the stone ceiling.
Nathan knocked the weapon from Tessa’s hand while Daniel pulled Rose away.
Then the tunnel door slammed shut.
Samuel’s voice came through a speaker.
“Every Mercer chooses eventually.”
Water began pouring through vents near the floor.
Samuel had activated the fountain reservoir.
The chamber filled quickly.
Tessa stared at the rising water.
“He said the tunnel was an escape route.”
Rose faced her.
“He never intended you to escape.”
Daniel found the manual release beneath the stairs.
It required two keys.
