Chapter 5 - SABRINA'S FIRST LIE

Sabrina returned to the house the following afternoon.
She came alone.
Claire was sitting in the library.
"You shouldn't be here."
Sabrina stood at the doorway.
"I need to tell you something."
Claire looked at her.
"You've already told me plenty."
"I lied."
Claire remained silent.
"About Noah."
Claire's expression hardened.
Sabrina swallowed.
"Evan told me he wasn't sick."
"What?"
"He told me Noah was fine."
Claire stood.
"Say that again."
"Evan said the doctors were exaggerating. He said you were trying to use Noah to control him."
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
But she didn't cry.
"Why would he say that?"
"I don't know."
"You believed him?"
Sabrina looked down.
"I believed what I wanted to believe."
Claire stepped closer.
"Then tell me the truth."
Sabrina hesitated.
"Evan wasn't supposed to be with me that night."
"Who was he supposed to meet?"
"I don't know."
"Sabrina."
"I swear."
Claire studied her face.
"What happened at the hotel?"
Sabrina's eyes filled with fear.
"Evan received a phone call."
"From whom?"
"He said one sentence."
"What sentence?"
Sabrina whispered:
"They know about Noah."
Claire's heart dropped.
"Who is they?"
"I don't know."
"Then why were you afraid?"
Sabrina looked toward the hallway.
"Because after that call, Evan told me we had to leave."
"Why didn't you?"
May you like
Sabrina looked at Claire.
"Because someone had already locked the hotel door from the outside."
