Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD

Claire pulled the door open.
No one stood outside.
Only silence.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
"You shouldn't have come here."
Claire froze.
A man stepped into the light.
Older.
Gray at the temples.
Tired eyes.
But unmistakably familiar.
Daniel Bennett.
Claire couldn't speak.
Daniel looked at her.
"I knew you'd come eventually."
"You knew Noah?"
Daniel's expression softened.
"Better than anyone."
"Was he your son?"
Daniel didn't answer.
"Tell me."
He looked toward the photograph in her hand.
"Biology isn't the part that matters."
Claire's voice shook.
"He was my son."
"I know."
"Then why did Evan lie?"
Daniel looked away.
"Because if the truth came out, the company would have collapsed."
"That doesn't make sense."
"It will."
"What happened to you?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"Evan happened."
Claire stepped closer.
"Why did you let everyone think you were dead?"
"Because it kept Noah safe."
"Safe from what?"
Daniel looked directly at her.
"From the people who control Bennett Meridian."
Claire felt cold.
"Who?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he handed her a sealed envelope.
"Your husband doesn't control the company."
Claire stared.
"Then who does?"
Daniel whispered:
"The same person who made sure Noah's medical records disappeared."
Claire opened her mouth.
A car engine sounded outside.
Daniel's expression changed.
"They found us."
"Who?"
May you like
Daniel looked at the door.
"Run."
