Chapter 4 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE TRUST

The next forty-eight hours changed everything.
Claire learned that Evan's father had left behind more than money.
He had left voting rights.
Shares.
Private contracts.
And a sealed instruction.
The instruction was not addressed to Evan.
It was addressed to Claire.
The attorney placed the envelope in front of her.
"I've never opened it."
"Why?"
"Because it was legally sealed."
Claire stared at the handwriting.
She recognized it.
Evan's father had written to her once before.
On the day Noah was born.
Claire opened the envelope.
Inside was a single letter.
Mrs. Bennett,
If you are reading this, something has gone terribly wrong.
Claire's hands began to tremble.
The letter continued.
I trusted my son with the company.
I was wrong.
Claire looked at the attorney.
"How long did he know?"
"We don't know."
She continued reading.
There are accounts he has concealed.
There are agreements he has made without the board.
And there is one person he fears more than anyone.
Claire's eyes stopped.
The name had been deliberately covered by a legal seal.
The attorney looked uncomfortable.
"There's more."
"What?"
"Turn the page."
Claire did.
A handwritten sentence waited at the bottom.
Do not let Evan know the boy was the key.
Claire froze.
The boy.
Noah.
"What does that mean?"
The attorney shook his head.
"I don't know."
May you like
Claire looked toward the window.
For the first time, she wondered whether Noah's birth had been connected to something much larger than she had ever known.
