Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT CLAIRE FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

Claire couldn't breathe.
She stared at the document.
"No."
The attorney placed his hand over it.
"Before we assume anything, we need proof."
"Noah was Evan's son."
"Legally."
"Biologically?"
"We don't know."
Claire stood abruptly.
"Why didn't Evan tell me?"
The attorney didn't answer.
Because there was another possibility.
One that Claire didn't want to consider.
She returned home.
Evan was waiting outside.
"You've been digging."
Claire stopped.
"What did you do to Noah?"
Evan's face tightened.
"I loved my son."
"You abandoned him."
"I didn't know he was dying."
"You knew."
"I didn't."
"You read my message."
"I thought you were manipulating me."
Claire stepped closer.
"Who is Daniel?"
Evan froze.
That was enough.
Claire saw the answer before he spoke.
"Where is he?"
Evan looked away.
"Dead."
"Then why does his name appear on Noah's original birth certificate?"
Evan's face went white.
Claire whispered:
"Tell me the truth."
Evan took a step toward her.
"Claire, you don't understand what your son was."
Claire's expression changed.
"My son?"
Evan stopped.
"Why did you say it like that?"
He said nothing.
Claire stepped backward.
"What was Noah to you?"
Evan looked at her.
Then at the house.
Then toward the road.
Someone was watching them from a parked car.
Evan saw it.
His expression changed.
"Get inside."
Claire didn't move.
"Who is in that car?"
May you like
Evan whispered:
"Someone who has been waiting for you to find out."
