Chapter 2 - THE MESSAGE HE THOUGHT HE COULD DELETE

After Noah's funeral arrangements began, Claire discovered something strange.

Evan didn't ask about the hospital.

He didn't ask about the doctors.

He didn't ask what happened.

He asked about the company.

"Did the board meeting happen?"

Claire stared at him through the phone.

"You haven't even asked about Noah."

A pause.

"I know you're upset."

"I'm not upset, Evan."

She looked at Noah's photograph.

"I'm devastated."

Another pause.

"Can we talk about the company?"

Claire closed her eyes.

That was when something inside her changed.

For seven years, Evan had told her that business decisions were complicated.

That she didn't understand corporate politics.

That Bennett Meridian was his world.

Claire had believed him.

Until Noah got sick.

Then she started looking.

Bank statements.

Board records.

Share transfers.

Private emails.

Corporate expenses.

She discovered that Evan had moved millions through companies Claire had never heard of.

She discovered hotel charges.

Private accounts.

Payments disguised as consulting fees.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Sabrina Cole.

But the most disturbing discovery wasn't Sabrina.

It was a dormant trust.

The Noah Bennett Family Trust.

Claire had never heard of it.

The documents showed that the trust had been created seven years earlier.

Seven years.

The exact year Noah was born.

Claire called the attorney.

"Who created this?"

The attorney hesitated.

"Your husband."

"Why?"

"I can't discuss the contents without reviewing the authorization."

"Then review it."

He did.

And when he called back, his voice had changed.

"Claire."

"What?"

"There is something you need to know."

"What?"

"The trust wasn't created for Noah."

Claire sat perfectly still.

"Then who was it created for?"

The attorney didn't answer immediately.

"It was created to protect shares transferred from another person."

"Whose shares?"

Another pause.

"Evan's father."

Claire looked toward Noah's photograph.

"What does his father have to do with this?"

"I don't know yet."

"But you can find out."

May you like

"Yes."

"Then find out."
