Chapter 15 - THE NAME UNDER THE BLACK SEAL

Claire and Daniel escaped through the back of the house.
The attorney followed them.
By dawn, they were back at the Bennett estate.
The funeral flowers were still there.
Noah's photograph remained beside the casket.
Claire placed Daniel's sealed envelope on the table.
Evan arrived minutes later.
He looked exhausted.
He had lost control of the company.
He had lost his position.
He had lost Sabrina.
But he still had one thing.
Secrets.
Claire looked at him.
"Tell me about Daniel."
Evan stared at his brother.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Evan whispered:
"You shouldn't have found him."
Daniel answered:
"You shouldn't have lied to her."
Claire looked between them.
"What happened to Noah?"
Evan closed his eyes.
Daniel stepped forward.
"That's the question."
Claire's voice broke.
"I need the truth."
Daniel looked at her.
"You've been given pieces of it."
He pointed toward the sealed envelope.
"Open that."
Claire did.
Inside was one document.
A corporate ownership agreement.
At the bottom was a name.
Not Evan.
Not Daniel.
Not Claire.
Someone else.
Claire read it twice.
Her face changed.
"Who is this?"
Evan looked at the document.
He stepped backward.
"No."
Daniel stared at him.
"You know the name."
Evan shook his head.
"That's impossible."
Claire looked from one brother to the other.
"Tell me."
Neither answered.
The attorney picked up the document.
His expression slowly changed.
"Claire..."
"What?"
He turned the page.
There was a second signature.
A signature dated seven years earlier.
The day Noah was born.
Claire looked toward Noah's photograph.
Then she noticed something she had never seen before.
A tiny mark in the corner of the frame.
A symbol.
The same symbol appeared on the ownership agreement.
Claire touched it.
"Why was this on Noah's photograph?"
Daniel's face went pale.
Evan whispered:
"Because your son wasn't just the heir."
Claire looked at him.
"Then what was he?"
Before Evan could answer, every light in the house went out.
The attorney's phone rang.
He answered.
His face went white.
"Claire."
"What?"
"The board has just received a new ownership claim."
"From whom?"
He looked at Daniel.
Then at Evan.
Then at Claire.
"The person whose name is on the sealed certificate."
Claire's heartbeat quickened.
"Who?"
The attorney slowly lowered the phone.
"I don't know."
Claire stared at the dark hallway.
Then a sound came from the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Everyone froze.
Daniel whispered:
"Nobody should know we're here."
Claire looked toward Noah's photograph.
The frame had been moved.
Someone had touched it.
Behind the photograph was a folded piece of paper.
Claire pulled it free.
There was only one sentence.
You were looking for the wrong Bennett.
Claire looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked at Evan.
And Evan suddenly whispered something that made Claire's blood run cold.
"Claire..."
"What?"
He stared at the paper.
"That's my father's handwriting."
The front door opened.
No one was standing outside.
Only a black envelope lay on the marble floor.
Claire slowly walked toward it.
She picked it up.
Her name was written across the front.
Not in Evan's handwriting.
Not Daniel's.
Not the attorney's.
She opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Claire stared at it.
Then her face went completely still.
The photograph showed Noah.
But Noah wasn't seven.
He was younger.
Much younger.
And standing beside him was a person Claire had never seen before.
On the back of the photograph were six words:
Ask who was in the delivery room.
Claire slowly turned toward the attorney.
The attorney looked terrified.
Because he already knew the answer.
And for the first time, Claire realized that Noah's story might have begun long before the night he was born.
The house remained silent.
Then Claire's phone vibrated.
One new message.
No sender name.
Only a photograph attachment.
She opened it.
Her breath stopped.
The photograph showed the hospital corridor on the night Noah was born.
And standing at the end of that corridor was Evan's father.
Beside him stood another man.
A man Claire had seen before.
A man she had believed was dead.
Claire looked up.
Daniel was staring at the photograph.
He whispered:
"Now you know why they were willing to let everyone believe Noah was gone."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"Who are they?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He looked toward the locked study.
Then toward the black envelope.
Then finally at the photograph of Noah.
"There is one more person you haven't met."
The study door slowly opened by itself.
Inside, someone had left another sealed folder on the desk.
Claire took one step forward.
Then another.
The folder carried only one name.
Her own.
She reached for it.
And before her fingers touched the seal, the phone in her hand vibrated again.
This time the message contained only four words.
Don't open it alone.
Claire stopped.
Behind her, Evan whispered:
"Claire..."
She turned.
"What?"
Evan's face was drained of color.
"I know who sent it."
Claire stared at him.
"Who?"
Evan looked toward the dark hallway.
And somewhere inside the house, a child's music box began to play.
Then Evan said the name.
Claire's expression changed.
Because it was the one name nobody in the family had spoken for seven years.
The one name that could explain Noah.
The company.
Daniel's disappearance.
And why Evan's father had prepared everything before he died.
But Claire still didn't know the most important truth.
May you like
Whether the person behind the name wanted to protect her...
or had been waiting all these years for her to find the truth herself.
