Chapter 11 - THE FILE CLAIRE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEE

The car disappeared before the police arrived.

But someone left something behind.

A black folder.

It was sitting on Claire's doorstep.

Inside were photographs.

Noah at the hospital.

Noah at school.

Noah in the backyard.

Noah sleeping.

Someone had been watching him for years.

Claire's hands shook.

The final photograph showed Noah as an infant.

Beside him stood Daniel Bennett.

Claire recognized him from the old photograph.

On the back was a handwritten message.

He was never supposed to belong to Evan.

Claire stared at the words.

Then another page fell from the folder.

A laboratory report.

DNA testing.

Two names.

Daniel Bennett.

Noah Bennett.

Claire read the result.

Her knees nearly gave way.

The attorney caught her.

"What does it say?"

Claire couldn't answer.

She looked toward Noah's photograph.

For years, she had believed she understood her family.

Now she wasn't sure she had ever known the truth.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Claire Bennett?"

"Who is this?"

"You have the file."

"Who are you?"

"Someone who knew your son."

"Tell me who you are."

A pause.

Then:

"Ask Evan why Daniel disappeared."

The call ended.

Claire stared at the phone.

The attorney asked:

"Are you going to ask him?"

Claire looked toward the front door.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Evan isn't the person who knows the whole truth."

She picked up the black folder.

"He's the person who's afraid of it."
