Chapter 7 - The Photograph

The security team moved everyone inside.
The niece who had recorded the arrest was still holding her phone.
Caroline noticed.
"Give me your phone."
The girl hesitated.
"Why?"
"Because you may have recorded something you don't understand."
The girl handed it over.
Caroline watched the recording.
She saw herself being cuffed.
She saw Travis laughing.
She saw Margaret blaming her.
Then she saw something else.
A reflection in the window.
Someone standing across the street.
Caroline paused the video.
Zoomed in.
Her expression changed.
"Who is that?"
The girl shrugged.
"I don't know."
Caroline handed the phone to the security officer.
"Find him."
The officer studied the image.
"That's not our team."
"No."
"Do you recognize him?"
Caroline stared at the screen.
"I thought he was dead."
Everyone heard her.
Travis looked up.
"Who?"
Caroline didn't answer.
The older man from the sedan approached.
"General, we need to discuss this privately."
She shook her head.
"No more secrets."
He lowered his voice.
"You know what happens if we tell them."
Caroline looked around the room.
"I know."
Margaret stepped forward.
"Tell us what?"
Caroline finally looked at her mother.
"The reason I stayed away."
Margaret's eyes filled with confusion.
"Why?"
Caroline took a breath.
"Because someone has been trying to get close to this family for years."
The room fell silent.
Laura whispered:
"Why?"
Caroline looked toward the window.
"Because they weren't trying to get to me."
May you like
She paused.
"They were trying to get to you."
