Chapter 4 - The Black SUVs

The first SUV crossed the street.

Then another.

Then another.

The family stopped talking.

Five vehicles approached the house.

Laura's face went pale.

"What is happening?"

Caroline didn't answer.

The SUVs stopped.

Doors opened.

People emerged.

No shouting.

No panic.

Just movement.

Precise.

Controlled.

Travis slowly reached for his radio.

"Dispatch, I have several vehicles—"

A man in a dark suit looked directly at him.

"Deputy."

Travis froze.

The man's voice was calm.

"Step away from her."

Travis looked around.

"This is a family matter."

"No."

The officer's eyes remained fixed on the cuffs.

"It isn't."

Margaret stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The man ignored her.

He walked toward Caroline.

"Ma'am."

Caroline gave him a look.

He stopped.

"Not here."

He nodded.

"Understood."

Travis stared.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Another person approached the senior officer and whispered something.

The officer's face tightened.

He looked toward the road.

Caroline noticed.

"What?"

"We have a problem."

"What kind?"

"Someone else is approaching."

Caroline's expression changed.

"How many?"

"Unknown."

She looked toward the street.

For the first time that day, she seemed genuinely concerned.

Travis noticed.

And misunderstood it.

"You finally scared?"

Caroline looked at him.

"No."

May you like

She glanced toward the road.

"I'm worried about you."
