Chapter 1 - The Woman Everyone Thought They Knew

Three hours earlier, Caroline Hayes had stood alone near the edge of her mother's backyard, holding a paper plate she had barely touched.

The Fourth of July gathering was exactly what she had expected.

Too loud.

Too crowded.

Too familiar.

Children ran between the patio chairs while adults gathered around the barbecue.

American flags moved gently in the summer breeze.

Music played from a speaker near the pool.

Luxury SUVs filled the driveway.

Everyone appeared happy.

Caroline wasn't.

She had spent most of her life learning how to remain invisible in rooms where powerful people were watching.

Her family had mistaken that discipline for weakness.

They had done so for years.

"Still hiding in the corner?"

Caroline turned.

Laura stood behind her with a drink in one hand.

Laura was wearing a floral summer dress and an expression that suggested she had already won an argument Caroline didn't remember having.

"I'm enjoying the quiet."

Laura laughed.

"At Mom's house? That's impossible."

Caroline smiled faintly.

Laura studied her.

"You know, sometimes I think you actually like making everyone uncomfortable."

"I don't."

"Then why are you always so serious?"

Caroline looked across the yard.

"Some people learn to be careful."

Laura rolled her eyes.

"There she goes again."

Before Caroline could answer, Travis appeared.

He was already wearing his deputy uniform.

He had arrived late and had immediately started behaving as though the entire backyard belonged to him.

"Mom wants you inside."

Caroline glanced toward the house.

"Why?"

"She didn't say."

"Then she can tell me herself."

Travis smiled.

That smile had always bothered Caroline.

It was the smile of someone who believed he had an advantage.

"You haven't changed."

"Neither have you."

Laura laughed.

Travis's smile disappeared for half a second.

Then returned.

"Still pretending you're important?"

Caroline said nothing.

Travis stepped closer.

"Twenty years of Army paperwork and you still haven't figured out how normal people live."

Laura looked away.

Caroline simply set her plate down.

"Enjoy the cookout, Travis."

She walked away.

Behind her, Travis watched.

His pride had been wounded.

And he had no intention of letting it go.

Across the yard, Margaret Hayes had seen everything.

She approached Travis.

"Don't start something today."

Travis shrugged.

"She started it."

Margaret sighed.

"Caroline always does."

Neither woman noticed the dark sedan parked several houses away.

Inside sat two people who had been watching the house for almost twenty minutes.

One of them looked at a photograph.

Then looked at Caroline.

"That's her."

The other person nodded.

"Are you sure?"

"Absolutely."

"Then why isn't she surrounded by anyone?"

May you like

The first person stared at Caroline.

"Because she doesn't need to be."
