Chapter 10 - The House Goes Dark

Margaret gasped.
Laura grabbed the nearest chair.
The security team moved instantly.
"Stay where you are."
Caroline stood.
"Everyone down."
The house remained dark.
Outside, the fireworks continued.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then a phone vibrated.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Travis looked at his phone.
The screen showed an unknown message.
Caroline took it from him.
There was only one sentence.
YOU SHOULD HAVE ASKED HER WHO SHE WORKS FOR.
Caroline stared at it.
Then another message appeared.
YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.
Laura whispered:
"Ten minutes for what?"
Caroline looked toward the security officer.
"Get everyone out through the rear."
"General, what about you?"
"I'm staying."
"No."
Caroline looked at him.
"That's an order."
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
Travis stood.
"I'm staying too."
Caroline looked at him.
"You caused enough trouble today."
"I know."
"Then don't make another mistake."
Travis shook his head.
"I owe you."
Caroline's expression softened slightly.
"You owe your family."
A loud sound came from outside.
Everyone froze.
Caroline moved toward the window.
She saw a shadow near the gate.
Then another.
The security officer whispered:
"They're here."
Caroline nodded.
"Then we finally know what they want."
Travis looked at her.
"What?"
May you like
Caroline turned.
"Me."
