Chapter 21 - The Wrong Woman
Travis retrieved the original arrest report from the county records office.
The file contained a photograph of Caroline.
But beneath it was another photograph.
The woman looked almost identical.
Same eyes.
Same hair.
Same scar near the eyebrow.
Caroline stared at her.
“Who is she?”
Travis read the name.
“Anna Mercer.”
Margaret went silent.
Caroline looked at her.
“You know her.”
Margaret nodded.
“She was Eleanor's closest friend.”
“Where is she now?”
Margaret's voice dropped.
“She disappeared the same week Eleanor supposedly died.”
Caroline examined the second photograph.
Something felt familiar.
Not the woman.
The necklace around her neck.
Caroline touched her own necklace.
It was identical.
Travis noticed.
“That belonged to Eleanor.”
Caroline suddenly understood.
Anna had not been impersonating Caroline.
Someone had been impersonating Anna.

And the person who ordered the false arrest had known exactly what Caroline would look like twenty-three years later.
The entire arrest had been designed long before Caroline ever knew it existed.
