Eleanor stayed in town.
At first, Caroline didn't know how to call her.
Mother felt too large.
Eleanor felt too unfamiliar.

Coffee.
Walks.
Long conversations.
Old photographs.
Sometimes they laughed.
Sometimes they cried.
Neither tried to pretend twenty-three years could be repaired in a few weeks.

Inside was the necklace Caroline had worn since childhood.

Eleanor nodded.
She pulled another necklace from her pocket.

A complete circle.
Caroline smiled.
