Chapter 27 - What Her Father Left Behind

Caroline returned to her childhood home.

The house had been empty for years.

In her father's study, she found one final envelope.

Her name was written on it.

Inside was a letter.

He apologized.

Not for everything.

For the choices he had made.

He admitted that he had known Eleanor was alive.

He admitted that he had watched Caroline grow up from a distance.

And he admitted that he had been too afraid to tell her the truth.

The final paragraph was short.

“I wanted to give you a normal life. I failed. But if you ever discover the truth, please don't spend the rest of yours punishing yourself for my mistakes.”

Caroline folded the letter.

For years, she had believed her past had stolen her future.

Now she understood.

Her future had never belonged to her past.

She was finally free to choose it.
