Chapter 17 - The Deputy’s Confession

Caroline opened the door.
Travis stood on the porch, breathing heavily.
“There are people looking for you.”
Caroline tightened her grip on the photograph.
“How do you know?”
“Because they came to my house first.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“Who?”
Travis hesitated.
“Men from the state investigation office.”
Caroline frowned.
“They wouldn’t come to your house.”
“They did.”
He pulled a folded document from his jacket.
“My badge was suspended this morning.”
Margaret stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because I refused to sign a statement saying Caroline was the woman I arrested.”
Silence filled the room.
Caroline finally understood.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You knew something was wrong the moment you put those cuffs on me.”
Travis nodded.
“The woman I was ordered to arrest had the same name as you. Same date of birth. Same photograph.”
“But it wasn't me.”
“No.”
He looked at Margaret.
“It was someone who wanted you to believe it was.”
Caroline unfolded the photograph again.
Travis immediately recognized the three men.
“Where did you get that?”
“Margaret.”
Travis's face hardened.
“You can't keep that here.”
“Why?”
“Because Edward knows about it.”
Margaret whispered, “Edward is already here.”
Everyone turned toward the hallway.
