Chapter 14 - The Betrayal Inside Washington

Caroline stared at the photograph for nearly a minute.

The senior officer stood beside her.

"General?"

She didn't answer.

"Who is that?"

Caroline finally spoke.

"The person who approved my promotion."

The officer looked shocked.

"Are you certain?"

"Yes."

Travis stepped closer.

"What's his name?"

Caroline folded the photograph.

"I can't say."

"Why?"

"Because if I'm right, every person in this house is already being watched."

Laura looked toward the windows.

"Then what do we do?"

Caroline turned toward the security team.

"Nobody leaves alone."

The senior officer nodded.

"Agreed."

Caroline's phone rang.

This time the caller ID was visible.

Washington.

She answered.

"General Hayes."

A voice spoke.

"We need you at the Pentagon immediately."

Caroline looked at the clock.

"Who authorized this?"

A pause.

Then:

"Your superior."

Caroline's expression hardened.

"Which one?"

Another pause.

The caller disconnected.

Caroline slowly lowered the phone.

The senior officer watched her.

"That wasn't a secure call."

"No."

"Then who was it?"

Caroline looked at the photograph.

"I don't know."

Travis stepped forward.

"What happens now?"

Caroline looked at him.

"Now I find out who betrayed me."

Then the front door opened.

A uniformed officer stepped inside.

Everyone turned.

He held up an identification badge.

"General Hayes."

Caroline studied him.

"What do you want?"

He looked directly at Travis.

"Deputy Hayes is under investigation."

Travis froze.

"For what?"

The officer answered:

"Conspiracy."

Caroline's eyes narrowed.

"That's impossible."

The officer smiled.

"Is it?"

He placed a folder on the table.

Inside was a photograph of Travis meeting Edward Vale.

Travis stared at it.

"I've never seen this."

Caroline looked at the photograph.

Then at the officer.

Something was wrong.

May you like

Very wrong.

Because the photograph had been taken tomorrow.
