THE BUTTERFLY CAKE RECORDING / Chapter 40 / 40

Chapter 40 - THE GIRL ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATEBy sunrise, police controlled the hospital.

Victor was gone.

Lily was missing.

The original Laura survived the assembly but remained unconscious.

Six memory vessels chose new names.

Two retained the name Laura.

One disappeared before investigators arrived.

Marcus was taken into custody.

Bennett survived surgery.

Benjamin refused the Hale name and left with Adrian to locate other replacement subjects.

Evelyn surrendered herself and delivered twenty years of Victor’s records.

Margaret stepped down as trustee.

Samuel did not ask Harper to call him her father.

He simply remained near the hospital room.

At eleven fifty-eight that night, Harper sat beside Laura.

Her seventeenth birthday was two minutes away.

The trust documents waited on a tablet.

At midnight, Harper would become the legal owner of Hale House, the medical network and every surviving archive.

Nolan stood outside the room.

Rebecca had left a note.

A borrowed memory taught me to love you. The choice to leave is mine.

Harper folded it carefully.

The clock reached midnight.

The tablet activated.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HARPER.

A butterfly appeared.

Then the trust transfer failed.

BENEFICIARY DECEASED.

Harper stared at the message.

Nolan entered.

“We found the source of the hospital fatality record.”

The person who died under Harper’s name had Harper’s fingerprints, blood type and childhood dental records.

Lily.

But there was no body.

Only enough blood to produce a death declaration.

Harper opened the birth registry.

Her own certificate had changed.

NAME: HARPER ELAINE SHAW

MOTHER: LAURA HALE

FATHER: VICTOR SHAW

STATUS: DECEASED

A second certificate appeared.

NAME: LILY BENNETT HALE

MOTHER: LAURA HALE

FATHER: BENNETT HALE

STATUS: ACTIVE

Harper’s pulse stopped.

According to the official record, Lily was Bennett and Laura’s daughter.

Harper was Victor’s.

Laura opened her eyes.

“Do not believe the certificate.”

Harper turned.

“You are awake.”

Laura struggled to speak.

“Victor switched the newborn records.”

“Which one is true?”

Laura reached for her hand.

“I never knew.”

The door opened.

Bennett stood there with his arm in a sling.

Behind him was a girl wearing Harper’s blue birthday dress.

Lily.

She held the trust tablet.

Every security guard in the hallway treated her as the legal Harper Hale.

Lily looked at Laura.

Then at Bennett.

Finally, she looked at Harper.

“I did not steal your name,” she said.

“It was mine first.”

Bennett stepped between them.

“That is not true.”

Lily placed the original butterfly cake recording on the table.

“The final section disagrees.”

She played it.

Laura appeared holding two newborn girls.

Bennett stood beside her.

Victor’s voice spoke from behind the camera.

“One child carries the Hale inheritance.”

“One carries the Cross memory resistance.”

Laura looked down at the infants.

Then she exchanged their blankets.

The recording ended before revealing which child she gave to whom.

Harper looked at her mother.

“You switched us.”

Laura began crying.

“I was trying to save both of you.”

“Which one am I?”

Before Laura could answer, the hospital lights went out.

Emergency candles illuminated the corridor one by one.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Seven.

Eight.

Nine.

A tenth candle appeared on the trust tablet.

Then an eleventh.

Everyone stared.

Laura’s face filled with terror.

“There was never an eleventh candle.”

A new recording opened.

It showed Elaine Cross inside the Monarch Center seventeen years earlier.

She held a third newborn child.

A boy.

On the blanket was a black butterfly.

Elaine looked into the camera.

“If Harper and Lily have reached the final recording, Victor has already begun searching for the third heir.”

The camera moved.

Behind Elaine stood Samuel Reed.

He was holding the red box from Harper’s false memory.

Samuel, standing inside the hospital room, went pale.

Harper turned toward him.

“You knew.”

He backed away.

“I thought the child died.”

The recording continued.

“The boy was given a name no Hale, Shaw or Cross record contains.”

Elaine opened the red box.

Inside was a silver hospital bracelet.

The name engraved on it was:

NOLAN REED.

Everyone looked toward the hallway.

Nolan was gone.

His weapon and federal badge lay on the floor.

The hospital intercom activated.

Nolan’s voice filled every room.

“Harper, Lily—do not sign the trust.”

A scream sounded somewhere below them.

Then Nolan continued:

“Victor is not trying to steal the inheritance.”

“He is trying to stop whatever Laura buried beneath it.”

The trust tablet opened a final hidden page.

BUTTERFLY PROTOCOL: PHASE TWO

THREE HEIRS REQUIRED

HARPER — MEMORY

LILY — IDENTITY

NOLAN — AUTHORITY

A countdown appeared.

TRUST ACTIVATION: 23:59:59

Beneath it was one warning:

IF THE THREE HEIRS DO NOT ASSEMBLE, EVERY REPLACEMENT IDENTITY WILL BE PERMANENTLY ERASED.

Harper looked at Lily.

Across the country, thousands of people were living under reconstructed names.

Some were criminals.

Some were victims.

Some no longer had any other identity.

Laura pulled herself upright.

“You cannot activate it.”

Bennett looked at her.

“Why?”

Laura’s eyes moved toward the dark window.

A man stood outside the hospital.

Victor.

Beside him was Nolan.

But Nolan was not restrained.

He was holding the red box.

Victor smiled toward the glass.

Nolan opened it.

Inside lay a black butterfly candle.

He lit it.

Every monitor in the hospital displayed the same message:

THE REAL BIRTHDAY BEGINS NOW.

Harper took Lily’s hand.

The trust countdown continued.

And from the unconscious mind of the woman everyone called Laura, another voice whispered through the neurological monitor:

May you like

“Do not let my daughters find out which one of them I chose.”
