THE BUTTERFLY CAKE RECORDING / Chapter 30 / 40

Chapter 30 - THE WOMAN HARPER SAVEDBenjamin pulled Harper backward while Nolan and Samuel lifted the woman from the broken floor.

It was Rebecca.

The original Laura’s chamber had fallen into the lower level.

The other vessels escaped through the warehouse exits.

Victor vanished during the explosion.

Daniel was found unconscious on the bridge.

Evelyn recovered the remote trigger, but all data from the central archive had been destroyed.

Harper knelt beside the opening.

“Mom!”

A faint light moved below.

Someone was alive.

Adrian descended using an emergency cable.

He returned fifteen minutes later alone.

“The chamber is empty.”

“That is impossible.”

“The glass broke. There is blood, but no body.”

A service tunnel led away from the impact site.

Laura had either escaped or been removed.

Rebecca touched Harper’s shoulder.

“I can remember where the tunnel goes.”

She saw fragments from Laura’s memory: a riverside clinic, a white tower and a room filled with butterfly specimens.

Evelyn recognized the description.

“The Monarch Center.”

Victor’s private neurological facility had officially closed eight years earlier.

It stood across the state near the coast.

Nolan requested federal support.

His call connected to a woman who identified herself as Director Elaine Cross.

She ordered him to stop the investigation and surrender every recording.

Nolan ended the call.

“My agency does not have a Director Elaine Cross.”

Daniel regained consciousness.

He heard the name and began laughing.

“Elaine is not a director.”

“Who is she?” Harper asked.

“The first Laura.”

Rebecca’s face changed.

Before Laura Hale, Victor had used another woman to develop the memory map.

Elaine Cross.

Her memories became the foundation on which all later identities were built.

“She designed the voice patterns,” Daniel said. “The emotional anchors. The false childhoods.”

Benjamin looked toward Hale House.

“Then Victor did not create the program.”

“No,” Evelyn replied.

“He inherited it from Elaine.”

Harper’s phone vibrated.

A video call showed the missing original Laura sitting inside a white room.

A woman stood behind her.

Her face changed subtly as the camera adjusted.

First Laura.

Then Evelyn.

Then Margaret.

Then Harper.

The woman smiled using Harper’s own face.

“Bring me the tenth candle,” she said.

“Or your mother becomes the final recording.”
