THE BUTTERFLY CAKE RECORDING / Chapter 39 / 40

Chapter 39 - THE BIRTHDAY SHOTHarper stared at Laura.

“Why?”

Laura’s hands trembled.

“Move away from the archive.”

Bennett pressed a hand against his shoulder. The bullet had missed his heart.

Marcus laughed.

“She finally chose.”

Laura looked at him.

“No.”

She fired.

The bullet struck Marcus in the chest.

He collapsed against the birthday table.

The cake slid to the floor.

Laura lowered the weapon.

“I was aiming past you.”

Harper did not know whether to believe her.

Nolan and Samuel entered seconds later.

Marcus was still alive.

Before losing consciousness, he whispered one word.

“Basement.”

Bennett was taken to the ambulance.

Harper followed Laura into Hale House’s lowest level.

Behind the wine cellar, they found a room absent from every plan.

Inside were birthday recordings from Harper’s first year through her sixteenth.

Each showed a cake.

Each contained one more butterfly than the year before.

Harper had no memory of most of them.

Some were filmed while she slept.

Some used Lily in her place.

Some showed Rebecca.

Some showed Laura.

The final monitor displayed a live feed.

Lily sat inside the Hale Family Health hospital surrounded by the nine Laura vessels.

The false Daniel stood beside her.

He removed his facial prosthetic.

Beneath it was Victor.

He had never trusted one substitute to play him for long.

Victor looked into the camera.

“Marcus failed.”

Laura whispered, “He was never the final controller.”

Victor activated the assembly system.

The nine Laura vessels were connected to the original Laura through neural lines.

But the original Laura stood beside Harper.

Harper looked at her.

The woman lowered her eyes.

Rebecca.

Harper had saved Rebecca from the warehouse.

At some point after the explosion, Rebecca and Laura exchanged places.

Harper stepped away.

“Where is my mother?”

Rebecca pointed toward the screen.

The woman in the central hospital chair opened her eyes.

Laura.

Victor had the original.

He began the memory assembly.

Harper used her archive authority.

The system demanded a final identity verification:

WHO IS LAURA HALE?

Four options appeared.

The biological woman.

The legal identity.

The combined memories.

The person Harper chose as her mother.

Harper understood the trap.

Any single answer would erase the others.

She typed:

ALL WHO CHOOSE THE NAME.

The system hesitated.

Then every Laura vessel received independent authority over her own memories.

Some disconnected immediately.

Some chose partial transfer.

Rebecca selected separation.

The original Laura remained connected long enough to locate Victor’s control room.

Lily attacked him from behind.

The camera fell.

Gunfire echoed.

Then the feed went black.

A hospital alarm reported one fatality.

The identity field read:

HARPER HALE.

Harper stared at the screen.

She was still alive.

Someone had died under her name.
