THE BUTTERFLY CAKE RECORDING / Chapter 38 / 40

Chapter 38 - THE PRICE OF A NAMEMarcus controlled medication systems across the Hale hospital network.

If Harper exposed the archive publicly, he would shut down life-support access in six facilities.

If she surrendered authority, he promised to release Bennett and the Laura vessels.

Bennett had already escaped, but Marcus did not know.

Harper kept that advantage hidden.

Nolan traced Marcus to the public Hale House.

The mansion where Harper believed she had grown up.

Bennett joined them near the property.

Harper saw him in person for the first time.

He looked older than Benjamin.

There was no perfect recognition.

No magical certainty.

Only a man who cried when he saw her.

“I missed nine birthdays,” he said.

“Eight,” Harper replied.

He shook his head.

“Your real birthday is tomorrow.”

Harper stared.

The butterfly cake party had not taken place on her birth date.

Victor moved it one day early to align with the ninth-candle protocol.

Tomorrow would be Harper’s seventeenth birthday.

The trust would transfer fully at midnight.

Marcus did not merely want archive authority.

He wanted Harper’s ownership of Hale House and the medical network.

They entered through the old greenhouse.

Laura remained behind under Nolan’s guard, but Harper no longer knew whether distance made anyone safer.

Inside the mansion, Marcus sat at the dining table.

A butterfly cake stood before him.

Nine candles burned.

A tenth lay beside the knife.

“You know what I learned from being Bennett?” Marcus asked.

“What?”

“That people do not love a person. They love consistency.”

Bennett stepped into the room.

Marcus looked at him with resentment.

“I was a better father.”

“You terrorized my daughter.”

“I remembered every school meeting.”

“You altered her grades.”

“I knew when she cried at night.”

Bennett stopped.

Marcus had lived inside the house when Bennett could not.

Some of his care might have been real.

That made the betrayal worse.

Harper placed the master archive device on the table.

“Release the hospitals.”

Marcus pointed to the tenth candle.

“At midnight, light it. Transfer the trust to me.”

“No.”

“Then people die.”

Harper studied the cake.

The butterfly decorations were not identical.

One concealed a microphone.

Another contained a biometric reader.

The cake was recording.

Laura had built the protocol so every final choice became evidence.

Harper looked toward the hidden camera.

Then she addressed the hospital network directly.

“My name is Harper Hale. Marcus Vale is threatening patients using systems owned through my trust.”

Marcus laughed.

“No one will believe you.”

Harper pressed the tenth candle into the cake.

It did not light.

Instead, every hospital system switched to manual control.

Laura had anticipated the hostage scenario.

The tenth candle severed remote authority permanently.

Marcus’s face changed.

Bennett moved toward him.

A shot rang out.

Bennett fell.

Marcus held the gun.

Harper looked down at her father’s blood.

Behind Marcus, Laura entered the room.

May you like

She was holding a second gun.

It was aimed at Harper.
