THE BUTTERFLY CAKE RECORDING / Chapter 25 / 40

Chapter 25 - THE TENTH CANDLERebecca led them through the archive to an old dumbwaiter shaft.

Victor’s men searched the corridor behind them.

She explained that Laura’s memory contained images of a second protocol.

The ninth candle exposed threats inside the family.

The tenth candle exposed threats inside Harper herself.

Harper stopped climbing.

“What does that mean?”

Rebecca did not answer.

They emerged inside the library.

The silver model of Hale House still sat on the desk.

Harper opened its roof.

Nine tiny candle lights glowed.

Rebecca pressed the butterfly-shaped chimney.

A tenth light appeared beneath the model.

A drawer opened.

Inside was a sealed medical file.

HARPER HALE — SUBJECT H10

Bennett reached for it.

Harper took it first.

The records showed neurological scans, blood tests and behavioral studies beginning before she was born.

Laura had received experimental fertility treatment through Hale Family Health.

Victor’s father had altered the embryo screening.

Harper had been selected because she carried a rare resistance to memory-conditioning drugs.

She was not merely the control subject.

She was the only known person the replacement program could not reliably reprogram.

Victor needed her declared unstable because he could not alter her memories directly.

So he altered everyone around her.

Harper closed the file.

The false grades.

The birthday humiliation.

Bennett’s replacement.

Every lie had been built to make her doubt what drugs could not erase.

Rebecca touched Harper’s shoulder.

“Laura built the tenth candle to verify that you still trusted your own mind.”

“How?”

The file contained ten statements.

Nine were facts Harper had been taught.

One was false.

She had to identify it.

Harper read them.

Bennett was her biological father.

Laura gave birth to her.

Margaret was Bennett’s mother.

Adrian was Laura’s brother.

Daniel was Bennett’s twin.

Evelyn entered the family after Laura’s illness.

Victor controlled the replacement program.

Samuel Reed protected Laura’s trust.

Nolan worked for federal investigators.

Harper’s eighth birthday occurred at Hale House.

Harper stared at the final statement.

Her birthday party had been at Hale House.

She remembered the library, cake and blue butterflies.

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

“The party happened at a medical facility designed to resemble Hale House.”

Harper looked around the library.

The wallpaper.

The piano.

The green velvet chair.

Hale House itself might be a reconstruction.

Bennett walked toward the window.

He struck the glass.

It did not break.

Behind the painted landscape was steel.

They had never returned above ground.

The elevator had brought them into another underground set.

Victor appeared behind the library doors.

He applauded slowly.

“You found the tenth candle.”

May you like

Then he looked at Harper.

“Now tell me which Hale House you believe is real.”
