THE BUTTERFLY CAKE RECORDING / Chapter 31 / 40

Chapter 31 - THE MONARCH CENTERThe Monarch Center stood on a cliff above the Atlantic.

From the outside, it resembled an abandoned research hospital.

Inside, the walls were covered with preserved butterflies.

Harper entered with Nolan, Samuel, Benjamin, Adrian, Evelyn and Rebecca.

Daniel remained under guard but gave them a map.

Margaret stayed with the surviving Laura vessels at a protected location.

The front doors opened automatically.

Elaine’s voice welcomed them.

“Harper Hale. Subject H10.”

Harper carried the tenth-candle file inside a sealed bag.

She had no intention of surrendering it.

They passed rooms containing actors wearing prosthetic faces, children practicing family stories and technicians recording emotional responses.

The program had never depended only on surgery.

It produced believable identities through repetition.

In one room, a boy practiced calling a photograph “Mom.”

Samuel stopped.

The boy looked like Harper at age ten.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Same way of holding his shoulders.

Same pause before answering.

Elaine had copied behavioral patterns too.

Rebecca covered the observation glass.

“No more.”

At the central laboratory, they found Laura restrained in a chair.

She was conscious.

Harper ran toward her.

A transparent wall rose between them.

Elaine entered from the opposite side.

She wore no borrowed face now.

She was an elderly woman with white hair and sharp, clear eyes.

“You expected a monster,” Elaine said.

“I expected another liar.”

Elaine smiled.

“That is why you are the successful subject.”

She explained that the identity program began after her daughter disappeared.

Police ignored the case because the child’s body was never found.

Elaine became obsessed with how easily a person could be erased when records, witnesses and memories failed.

She created systems to preserve identity.

Victor transformed them into tools for replacement.

“Then help us stop him,” Harper said.

“I am.”

Elaine pointed toward Laura.

“Victor believes she contains the final memory key.”

“She does not?”

“No.”

Elaine looked at Harper.

“You do.”

The butterfly cake recording had activated dormant neural associations embedded through childhood games.

Each candle opened a different layer.

The tenth candle did not verify Harper’s identity.

It completed a map inside her memory.

Laura cried behind the glass.

“Do not listen.”

Elaine continued.

“Victor cannot open the master archive without you remembering where Laura hid it.”

Harper shook her head.

“I do not know.”

Elaine pressed a button.

The room filled with the smell of vanilla cake.

Blue butterfly lights appeared.

A child’s voice began singing.

Harper saw a door in her memory that had never been there before.

Behind it stood Bennett.

The real Bennett.

He held a red box.

And he was still alive.
