Arrest warrants began generating automatically.
Not for Victor.
For Harper.
Lily stepped backward.
“I am sorry.”
“You knew this would happen.”
“I knew it would transfer. I did not know the system would name you as the architect.”
Victor had arranged every file to make Harper appear responsible.
The false behavioral reports now looked like early evidence of instability and manipulation.
The trust documents appeared to fund the program.
Her childhood medical tests appeared voluntary.
Laura’s recordings could be interpreted as training instructions.
Victor had turned Harper’s evidence into her confession.
Federal vehicles surrounded the Monarch Center.
Director Elaine Cross—the false federal official—appeared on the public news feed accusing Harper of replacing family members for financial control.
The real Elaine stared at the screen.
“He used my identity.”
Nolan received orders to arrest Harper.
He removed his badge.
“I am not following them.”
Samuel looked at Harper.
“What can the archive do?”
“Everything Victor could do.”
“Then find him.”
Harper used the network.
Victor’s face appeared in dozens of locations at once.
Some were substitutes.
Some were recordings.
One signal came from the flooded river chamber.
Victor had returned to where the ninth candle began.
Harper activated the chamber camera.
A man sat inside.
Not Victor.
Bennett Hale.
The original Bennett.
He appeared older, injured and alive.
Laura stared.
“That is impossible.”
Bennett looked into the camera.
“Harper, Victor lied about Geneva.”
Benjamin moved closer.
“Then who died?”
Bennett answered.
“Daniel Crest.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel was supposed to be under guard near Hale House.
Bennett continued.
“The man calling himself Daniel is Victor’s first successful replacement.”
A second screen activated.
Daniel stood inside the protected safe house beside Margaret.
He smiled at the camera.
Then he changed his voice.
It became Victor’s.
“Come home, Harper.”
The explosives around the Laura vessels activated again.
This time the timer displayed nine minutes.
Bennett pressed his hand against the flooded chamber glass.
“Do not trust Laura.”
Harper looked at her mother.
