THE BUTTERFLY CAKE RECORDING / Chapter 32 / 40

Chapter 32 - THE RED BOXThe memory felt real.

Bennett knelt beside eight-year-old Harper inside the birthday room.

“If anyone asks,” he said, “you never saw this.”

He placed the red box inside the piano.

Harper touched the transparent wall.

“The master archive is in the piano.”

Elaine smiled.

“Which piano?”

Three Hale Houses.

Three identical libraries.

Three identical pianos.

Harper closed her eyes.

In the memory, one piano key was chipped.

The public mansion’s piano had no damage.

The warehouse reconstruction had been destroyed.

The underground training house contained the chipped key.

Victor had known the archive was beneath Hale House but not which version.

Laura had divided every clue across Harper’s memories.

Elaine released the wall.

Harper ran to Laura.

Her mother was weak but alive.

Rebecca approached slowly.

Laura looked at the woman carrying pieces of her memory.

“I am sorry.”

Rebecca’s face tightened.

“You made me believe your grief was mine.”

“I did not know Victor would use living subjects.”

“You knew he used someone.”

Laura could not answer.

Before Harper could question her, the facility shook.

Victor’s men had arrived.

Elaine activated security shutters.

“You led him here,” Nolan said.

“No,” Elaine replied. “One of you did.”

Every phone and radio was placed on the table.

No active tracker appeared.

Rebecca examined Laura’s medical port.

A signal pulsed beneath her skin.

Laura had been the tracker.

Victor’s voice came through the lights.

“Thank you, Mother.”

Elaine froze.

Victor was her son.

The child Elaine once believed missing had been returned years later under another name.

Her husband had hidden him after learning Elaine’s identity research could be monetized.

Victor grew up believing his mother chose the program over him.

He spent his life turning her preservation system into proof that identity meant nothing.

Elaine opened the facility’s lower escape route.

Harper refused to leave without learning how to destroy the archive.

Elaine handed her a white butterfly key.

“The archive cannot be destroyed.”

“Everything can be destroyed.”

“Not when it exists in human memory.”

Victor entered the laboratory behind armed men.

He looked at Elaine.

“You built a world where anyone could become anyone.”

Elaine faced him.

“I built it because I lost you.”

“No.”

Victor smiled.

“You built it because grief made you important.”

He aimed at Laura.

Harper stepped between them.

Victor lowered the weapon.

“I will not kill the key.”

Then the chipped-piano memory changed.

Bennett opened the red box.

Inside was no drive.

It contained a photograph of Harper as a newborn.
