Chapter 34 - THE FALSE MEMORYElaine scanned Harper’s brain activity.

The red-box memory carried a signal pattern unlike her natural memories.
Someone had inserted it through repeated birthday recordings.
Laura appeared on screen in Harper’s childhood footage, placing the false story through games and phrases.
Harper looked at her mother.
“You did this.”
Laura did not deny it.
“I needed Victor to believe the archive location was inside you.”
“Why?”
“So he would keep you alive.”
“You made my mind into bait.”
“I made you impossible to discard.”
Harper stepped away.
Every adult in her life used protection to justify control.
Laura explained that the true master archive was not a place.
It was a sequence divided among ten people who attended Harper’s eighth birthday.
Each person unknowingly carried one phrase from a children’s song.
When combined, the phrases opened the financial and medical evidence network.
“Who were the ten?” Nolan asked.
Laura named them.
Harper.
Bennett.
Laura.
Adrian.
Margaret.
Samuel.
Evelyn.
Victor.
Daniel.
A tenth person whose name Laura refused to speak.
Bennett was officially dead.
Victor was missing.
Some memory vessels contained Laura’s phrase.
The sequence could still be reconstructed.
Harper asked about the unnamed tenth guest.
Laura looked toward Elaine.
Elaine answered.
“A girl sat beside Harper during the cake recording.”
Harper remembered no other child.
The video archive had been edited to remove her.
The girl was Elaine’s granddaughter through Victor.
Victor had a daughter.
Her name was Lily Shaw.
She was the same age as Harper.
Raised inside the identity program, Lily learned to copy Harper’s behavior.
She had served as Harper’s behavioral double.
Whenever Victor needed to create evidence of Harper acting unstable, Lily appeared on camera from angles that concealed her face.
The false grades and disciplinary reports were not entirely fabricated.
Another girl had lived portions of Harper’s life.
“Where is she now?” Harper asked.
Laura looked toward the facility entrance.
A young woman stood there wearing Harper’s coat.
Her hair, posture and expression matched Harper perfectly.
She held the missing original butterfly cake recording.

“Hello, Harper,” Lily said.
“I have been waiting for my birthday.”
